By the time January rolls around, your home might look and feel tired. The couch has seen some things, the walls are boring, and your space could really use a reset.

The bad news is that your bank account is still recovering from the damage done during the holidays. The good news is that making your home look and feel new does not require an extensive budget.

There are plenty of affordable ways to bring fresh energy into your home in the new year. Some simple swaps can make all the difference. Sometimes, it just takes a small change to feel brand-new again, and you’ll be wondering why you didn’t do this sooner.

Switch Out Your Throw Pillows

Revitalize your couch by switching out your throw pillows. The same colors and patterns can be dull and uninspiring, so why not experiment with new ones!

It’s a quick and easy way to add a bright, cheerful touch to 2026. You could even opt for throw pillow covers to switch between for different seasons.

Declutter

The start of a new year is always the best time to clean out all the clutter that’s been weighing you down. Take it slow so that it’s not too overwhelming.

You can tackle a junk drawer first and then move on to a shelf filled with trinkets that are just collecting dust. Go from room to room until your home is free of clutter. Once you’ve gotten rid of the things you don’t need, you’ll feel so much lighter.

Transform Your Bed

Now that it’s 2026, give yourself a bedroom makeover! During the cozy season, you want your bed to be a place of refuge, so it’s time to turn it into everything you’ve always wanted. Buy a new set of sheets or an eye-catching duvet cover to upgrade your personal retreat. Replacing your pillowcases with satin ones will also make your bed feel luxurious and inviting.

Change Your Home Fragrance

Scent plays a powerful role in how a space feels. It’s the first thing that people notice when they walk inside your home. Changing up your home fragrance can instantly make your home feel like new. Whether you use seasonal candles, essential oil diffusers, or wall plug-ins, it doesn’t take too much effort to do so.

Right now, I’m cycling through three of my favorite scented candles: buttered bread, pink champagne, and velvet petals. For January, you could try something with citrus notes to boost energy and mood during winter.

Bring In Some Plants

Winter is dull, dreary, and drab. Some plants, even if they’re artificial, can liven up a space just like that. It’s a breath of fresh air to rest your eyes on some greenery, which is rare to see during the cold season. Snake plants and succulents are low-maintenance and best for those who don’t have green thumbs.

Upgrade Your Window Treatments

Old or heavy curtains can make a room look outdated. Upgrade your window treatments with lighter fabrics, blackout curtains, or sheer drapes for a magical, dreamy effect. Even raising the curtain rod higher can give off the illusion that the ceilings are taller than they are and the room more open.
