Often, if a sibling or relative is going through a hard time and doesn’t have a place to live, other family members may pressure you to open your home to them and let them crash. But can you imagine if you were expected to give your house to them?

One woman was shocked after her in-laws told her and her husband that they should move and give their current home to her sister-in-law because she had to move after her divorce.

She and her husband are in their early 30s and have four children. They live in a house on some land her husband bought from his parents in a small town, rural area. They’re still in the house and are within walking distance from his family, including her two sisters-in-law.

She and her husband designed their home with the idea that they would live in it forever.

Her 25-year-old sister-in-law, who also has four kids, is in the middle of a difficult divorce from her husband.

A few nights ago, her mother-in-law invited her and her husband over and asked if they could chat. When they got to her house, her in-laws were sitting with her sister-in-law, and they were confused about what was happening.

“My mother-in-law didn’t beat around the bush at all,” she recalled.

“She explained how [my] sister-in-law’s ex was getting their house in the divorce, and they would be homeless within the month if we didn’t give her our home. It honestly took me a second to comprehend what she even said because it was so out of left field. [My] husband looked them dead in the eyes and said no.”

Her in-laws became very defensive and said that she, her husband, and their kids should move while her sister-in-law and her kids moved into their home because they were better off than her.

She tried to compromise with her in-laws and said her sister-in-law’s family could stay in their playroom and guest rooms while she figured out their next move, but that wasn’t good enough.

“They began yelling after us, saying we don’t care about the children, [that] family helps family, and we’re being greedy and selfish, etc.,” she said.

“I’m honestly so proud of how we reacted because my first instinct was to go off and say some hurtful things. But we just went home to our home. We love my sister-in-law’s kids and, obviously, do not want them to be homeless, but they don’t need my house at the expense of my own children and family.”

Her in-laws have been very upset with her and her husband since they said no to their proposition.

Should she feel bad for not letting her sister-in-law take over her home, or was she and her husband right to stand their ground? Let us know in the comments section; all you have to do is click the chat bubble on the right-hand side of the article to share your thoughts.
