A 23-year-old girl spent 2 years of her life dating a 26-year-old guy, John. She and John ended their relationship about a year ago, and she says he’s “one of the worst people” that she sadly has ever encountered so far.

Now, she has a friend, Emily, whom she met in high school, and they were extremely close to one another.

After they graduated and went off to college, they stopped being as close, though they still were in each other’s lives.

Emily had been aware of John since she started dating him.

“John is from another country and doesn’t speak my and Emily’s native language, so he and I spoke in English all the time,” she explained.

“After a year of being with John, Emily reached out to me and asked if we could all meet up and do stuff together so she could practice her English. I said yes and told John about it, which he also agreed to do.”

“From that point on me, John and Emily would meet 4 times a month and just hang out. This went on for at least 3 months, and it was fun until one day Emily decided that she hated both me and John.”

She can’t even recall why Emily got into a major argument with them, but after that, Emily stopped talking to her, and she also stopped talking to John as well.

She was crushed to have her friendship with Emily end in that way, though John did not consider this to be a big deal.

With time, she moved past being so upset about losing Emily as her friend, and 2 months later, she and John stopped being together.

John didn’t take their breakup so well, and he kept on messaging her and calling her relentlessly.

He insisted that an awful thing had happened and he desperately needed her to help him, but she didn’t buy it and didn’t speak to him.

Curiosity got the best of her, though, so she decided to look John up on social media…and then she noticed that Emily was commenting on his posts with flirty messages.

“The comments started a week after we broke up,” she said. “I was really taken aback, and it hit me that it was a possibility that he might’ve been cheating on me behind my back.”

She was so upset for several months following that social media discovery, but then she moved on with her life.

Right now, this is an entire year in her past. A couple of days ago, Emily sent her a message asking if they could chat.

She mentioned to Emily that she really didn’t want to, and Emily then let it slip that she had started dating John right post their breakup.

She responded to Emily that she had pieced that together based on the comments she had seen on John’s social media account.

“A few seconds after I sent that message, I got a call from her,” she continued. “I answered, and she blew up at me, saying, “If you knew we were dating, why didn’t you warn me about him?!”

“I asked her what she was talking about, and she said, “You dated him longer than I have, so you must’ve known how horrible he was! Why didn’t you warn me?! I would’ve warned you!”

“I replied by saying that she was the one who cut contact with me and I wasn’t obligated to help her. She called me rude names and said that I was the reason she wasted all her time and that she would’ve 100% warned me.”

She ended the call, and Emily did not attempt to reach out to her after that. She did decide to turn to her parents for some insight into everything, and they agree that it wasn’t her business to issue a warning to Emily.

Although her mom and dad agree with how she handled everything, she feels terrible. She knows John is a really bad guy, and if she was Emily, she would have loved to have a warning, but she didn’t think it was ok for her to do that.

Do you think she owed it to Emily to warn her about John?
