She Told Her Sister Not To Blow All Of Her Inheritance On Traveling The World After High School Without Getting An Education, So Now That Her Sister Is Without A Job And Running Out Of Money, She Does Not Really Have Any Sympathy
This thirty-three-year-old woman is six years older than her sister– who she believes is a truly talented and brilliant musician.
“I cannot praise her skill enough. Truthfully, I am somewhat jealous of it; that I didn’t get that,” she admitted.
She and her sister also have two older brothers– but the boys are much older than them. So, even though they all love each other as siblings, their brothers are more so like young uncles.
Anyway, after she and her three siblings sadly lost their grandparents, her parents received money for each of the four kids. Then, her mom and dad set it aside, invested it, and contributed to the sums.
“And they were not horrible people, so they didn’t take it for themselves or hold it over us to control us,” she noted.
Instead, by the time she and her siblings graduated from high school, all of their accounts were handed over.
Plus, they were given the freedom to use the money for whatever they chose– whether that be education, investing, traveling, you name it. It was entirely theirs.
The only stipulation, though, was that she and her siblings would receive their sums in yearly installments over six years.
She believes her parents set it up this way so that they could not blow all of the money on juvenile decisions only to grow up and realize all of the funds were gone.
She specifically chose to go to college. And since she received some financial assistance for her tuition, she was actually able to save nearly half of her inheritance.
In fact, she ended up holding onto so much dough that by the time she was just twenty-four years old, she was able to afford a sizeable downpayment on a home.
Now, her sister, on the other hand, decided to take an entirely different post-high school path. After graduating, her sister decided to prioritize traveling and seeing the world.
Her sister first backpacked through Europe before flying to Australia. Afterward, her sister went snowboarding in New Zealand and visited Argentina.
At that point, though, she started to become a bit concerned about her sister’s financial well-being and lack of education. So, she actually had a talk with her sister and advised her to start setting money aside for school.
However, her sister apparently claimed that she was making good money busking and believed she would be just fine.
Well, spoiler alert: the COVID-19 pandemic hit right after that. And since everyone was under isolation, performers like her sister were immediately out of work.
At the time, she thought that her sister would probably travel home and start her studies while the entire world was shut down. I mean, traveling– her sister’s dream– was virtually impossible, right?
“Nope. She stayed in Indonesia because it was cheap to live there,” she revealed.
Anyway, that was a couple of years ago. And now, her sister has finally returned home and is actually down to her last inheritance installment.
After her parents officially signed over the account to her sister with everything that was left, though, her sister kind of started to freak out.
All of a sudden, her sister realized that this was the end of her primary form of income and sustenance. Sure, there are enough funds to get her back in Indonesia. But afterward, her sister will have to face reality: there is no more money coming.
So, recently, her sister asked her to go get coffee. And during that cafe date, her sister began crying about her current situation.
Apparently, her sister revealed how she might have to use the remainder of the money to pay for an apartment. Then, her sister will have to figure out what to do with her life.
Primarily, her sister would love to teach English as a second language in Asia. Still, though, without a certification, her sister will get paid next to nothing. In other words, her sister would need a proper college degree in order to land a sustainable position.
And after her sister explained all of this, it apparently became clear that she was thinking, “I told you so” in her head. Now, she did not say that outright, but her sister obviously could guess that.
So, since then, she has been accused of being a total jerk for judging her sister’s choices and not supporting her sister’s lifestyle.
To be honest, though, she does not regret missing out on world traveling to start a life with a good financial foundation.
And since she tried to tell her sister this, she really does not sympathize with her sister’s situation anymore. Instead, she believes her sister created these problems herself.
“I wish I had traveled more when I was younger, but I got an education, and so did our brothers,” she vented.
“My sister chose to use her money that way.”
So, even though she does feel bad for her sister, she does remember telling her that blowing all of the money on traveling was not a wise decision.
At the same time, though, the fact that she does not sympathize more with her sister’s predicament has forced her to wonder if she is really acting like a jerk.
Do you think her sister made a wise decision by not going to school and blowing all of the inheritance money? Does she have a right to be thinking, “I told you so,” right now? Is it her job to sympathize with the bad choices that her sister made or not? If you were in her shoes, how would you feel about this situation?
