His Brother Got Him An Expensive Bottle Of Whiskey For His Birthday Even Though He Is 6 Years Sober, So He Threw It Out, And Now His Whole Family Is Furious With Him
This forty-year-old man is currently divorced. But, he had two children with his ex-wife, who are now teenagers– a seventeen-year-old son and a fourteen-year-old daughter.
He has also since started dating again and has a girlfriend whom he shares an apartment with.
Anyway, his fortieth birthday was actually just last week. So, to celebrate the occasion, his entire family went over to his apartment last Saturday.
The guests included his parents, some aunts and uncles, cousins, his three brothers, his two children, and his girlfriend’s fifteen-year-old son, who lives with him and his girlfriend.
Now, it is important to note that he is a recovered alcoholic who has been sober for about six years at this point. And getting to this milestone has not been easy.
“Alcohol absolutely ruined my life. It destroyed my marriage and nuked my relationship with my kids for years,” he explained.
So obviously, he does not want to be anywhere near alcoholic beverages. In fact, he actually does not allow any alcohol in his home at all– no matter who it is for. He simply refuses to serve it or tolerate it within his own space.
And apparently, his entire family knew about both his tumultuous history with alcohol as well as his “dry house” rule way before the party.
For whatever reason, though, his brother still decided to buy him an extremely fancy bottle of whiskey as his birthday gift.
The bottle was really heavy, even had engraved writing on it, and was very old. So, it is reasonable to assume that the bottle cost his brother a couple of hundred dollars.
Plus, after his brother actually gave him the gift, you can imagine how shocked he was. He did not freak out or anything, though.
Instead, he just told his brother that he did not drink but said thanks for the present anyway.
Well, his brother then decided to crack open the bottle in the middle of the party and began pouring shots into plastic cups for everybody. Then, his daughter went into shock.
“My daughter had a panic attack at the smell of the alcohol, which I am painfully aware is my fault, and I will never forgive myself for it,” he revealed.
So, at that point, he told his brother to take the alcohol out onto the balcony and leave it outside. Still, though, his brother refused to listen and actually just took a shot of the whiskey instead.
Then, even after he told his brother to stop in a much more serious and firm tone, his brother just kept pouring out drinks. And afterward, his brother had the nerve to try and demonize him for being sober.
“My brother said I am acting like a sober saint now when I ruined everyone’s birthdays for years with my drinking,” he recalled.
And that understandably pissed him off, so he told his brother to follow him into the hallway to talk the situation out.
Yet again, though, his brother refused. Then, his brother actually put a glass of whiskey into his hand!
At that moment, he decided to just grab the trash can, throw the bottle of whiskey and all of the plastic cups in it, and take the trash out to the curb. And apparently, his brother was furious.
In fact, his brother ended up storming off, and his mother followed suit. Then, later that evening, his mom actually called him and tried to demand that he apologize.
Apparently, he got accused of disrespecting his brother. Then, his dad even claimed that he was being “overly sensitive.”
Shockingly, some of his other family members have even since agreed with his parents and brother, too.
So now, he has been left wondering whether throwing out the bottle of whiskey was a smart decision to make for his sobriety or if it actually just made him a jerk, like everyone is saying.
Would you ever buy alcohol for someone you knew was sober? Why do you think his brother thought that was a good idea? Did he react in a reasonable way? If you had been in this situation, how would you have handled it?
