He Pointed Out How His Wife Still Had Her Baby Weight, And His Wife Has Been Really Upset Ever Since

This 32-year-old man has been married to his wife, who is 31, for nine years now. And throughout the course of their marriage, they have had three kids together.
Their oldest child is a 7-year-old boy. Then, they have two 2-year-old twins.
Anyway, while his wife was pregnant with their first son, he claimed that she did not gain a lot of weight, to begin with. Plus, she ended up losing the small amount of weight she did gain pretty quickly after giving birth.
According to him, though, her pregnancy with their twins was a different story.
Before having children, he recalled how his wife was always pretty petite, went to the gym four days a week, and weighed between 120 and 125 pounds.
Since delivering the twins, though, she is now about 180 pounds. And he claims that she has not attempted to lose any of the weight or return to the gym.
Then, the other night, his wife reportedly started complaining about how her new jeans no longer fit her.
Rather than saying something supportive, though, he thought it would be a good idea to “point out” how his wife “still has her baby weight.” Yikes.
Obviously, his wife became very upset and said that he essentially called her unattractive. According to him, though, that’s not what he meant.

“That is not the case at all,” he said. “I find my wife beautiful, but she keeps sizing up in her jeans and then acts confused about why.”
He also claimed that he and his wife are very open in their relationship. So, he did not think his comments would be “taken so offensively.”
Regardless, after his wife became upset, he told her that he thought she was beautiful. He also reiterated how the comment was not meant to be an insult; rather, he was just saying she had not lost the weight yet.
His attempt at an explanation did not make the situation any better, though, and his wife reportedly wound up getting defensive.
“She said she carried two babies in her body, so what did I expect,” he recalled.
Afterward, his wife apparently “had an attitude” with him for the remainder of the night. Then, once they went to bed, his wife slept as close to the wall as she could get– and he just didn’t understand why.
“We are open about things,” he vented. “I never meant for it to be taken so negatively or to insult her.”
But, with his wife still upset with him, he has been left wondering whether pointing out his wife’s post-pregnancy weight was the wrong thing to do.
Does it make sense why his wife has not been going to the gym four times a week, given the fact that she has 2-year-old twins? Regardless, should he have ever commented on her weight? Does his wife have a right to be upset? If you were in his shoes, how would you reconcile this situation?
