If You’ve Lost Hope In Dating Apps, She’s Talking About How She Found Her Fiancé In A Crazy Way
Can the dating apps ever actually result in a successful relationship? How many people actually find love through Hinge or Bumble? Maybe you don’t believe that love is actually possible with someone that you met on the apps–it can be really difficult to find someone that you connect with.
If you’ve lost hope in dating apps and have resorted to the idea of being single forever, Tik Tok creator Madeline @madelinecope is here to restore your faith. She found her fiancé in a crazy way on Hinge.
“I live in Dallas, Texas, and I thought, how fun and cute would it be if I matched with a boy from California on Hinge?” she said. “I just was thinking in my head, I love California so much, and the next time I fall in love, it’s not going to be with a Dallas boy, I just want to fall in love with a boy from the west coast.”
She decided to set her Hinge location boundaries all the way out to California in hopes of finding what she was looking for. She even stretched it past California to Washington–just as long as she got to date someone from the west coast.
The hard thing, she realized, was that she was a single mom at the time as well, which made it more difficult to actually draw someone in.
“I went on no dates,” she said. “After setting my location a couple of places…I had absolutely zero luck. Not to mention that I was a single mom, so guys were like, ‘Oh yeah, sure, she’s cute, but like, I’m not trying to play stepdaddy’.”
This process of searching repeatedly and cycling through profiles on Hinge went on for months. Without any luck, it became tiresome. She decided to cut herself off and end her search by deleting her dating apps.
“I’m like done at this point,” she said. “I go to delete my Hinge, and all of a sudden, I get a notification that this guy sends me a rose–the hottest man I have ever seen in my life!”
Things suddenly turn around for her, and she puts her plan to delete her Hinge on hold. He was so intriguing that she had to pursue him. There’s always a catch to a perfect scenario like this one, though.

“He asks me where I live, and I say I live in Dallas, Texas, and I’m like, ‘Where are you from?,” she explains. “He tells me he’s from Vancouver…he’s from Vancouver, Canada, so we’re in two different countries!”
She’s so upset by this, thinking that it will be impossible to ever have a relationship with this person who she was intrigued by and so excited about. She tries to pursue it anyway.
“Of course, the dreamiest, cutest one has to live in a different country from me!” she said. “We match, we have good conversation, he got my number, and we had small talk that I thought was going to die down in like a week or two.”
Luckily, their interactions turned out to be better than she could have ever imagined–making the entire situation all the more bittersweet.
“The conversation’s going better than well, I’m like, oh my gosh, this person could be my soulmate, and it absolutely does not die down after two weeks,” she said. “He asks to have a FaceTime date with me, and I agree, so we have the FaceTime date for, like, thirty-five minutes, and it is so awkward. I’m literally sweating, he’s barely talking, I’m kind of barely talking, and literally, when I hang the phone up, I just am like, okay, not happening.”
Though she thought it went terribly, something must have clicked for him because the next thing she knew, he was flying out to meet her in person.
“I agree to have him fly in and meet me,” she said. “We’re also still trying to figure out how we matched on Hinge because I never set my location up there.”
She decides to be adventurous and step outside of her comfort zone to meet someone from another country that she’s only ever met on FaceTime before. He booked them an Airbnb to stay at together.
“I’m sending the location to my parents and my friends because I’m well aware that, at this point, he could just be a serial killer, and I could be on an ex-Netflix documentary,” she said. “I get to the airport, and he gets off of his flight, and he is ten times dreamier in person, and my heart is fluttering.”
She’s finally excited after meeting him in person that this could go well and that it might actually work out. She’s still nervous, though, and makes some decisions when they’re out eating that puts her in a tricky spot–twice.
“To break the nerves, I drink a little bit when we go to lunch, and we had a dinner date planned that night. So, of course, I was mixing alcohol because I was not being careful, and I end up getting sick on our first date,” she said. “I proceeded to take him to my friend’s wedding as my date the next day, and of course, was so excited…drink too much and got absolutely sick.”
Despite these incidents, they ended up having a good first-date weekend with each other. Except, now he had to go back home–to a different country.
“He leaves, and I’m like, okay, now what?” she said. “Two weeks later, I get flowers sent to my home and a sweet little card that says, ‘I’ll never stop pursuing you’.”
What more could anyone want from a date like this? Despite being sick when meeting him for the first time, he was still interested. Turns out a lot more can happen.
“We fell absolutely in love with each other, we got engaged after six months,” she said. “So this is your sign to set your Hinge location to Canada!”
