Some people who choose to give their children up for adoption may deal with tremendous guilt for not being able to take care of their child and potentially regret their decision.

One woman became her sister’s daughter’s adoptive mother, and now she refuses to give her back.

She’s 26 years old and has a 21-year-old sister. Three years ago, her sister and her partner had a baby as teenagers. They were still finishing high school and were nowhere near ready to become parents.

They tried for a short time to raise their baby girl, but the stress of trying to be teenage parents took a toll on their mental health, and against their family’s wishes, they decided to put their daughter up for adoption.

“Our parents wouldn’t take her, so my now husband and I stepped up,” she explained.

“We wanted kids anyway, and I hated the thought of losing my niece, so we offered, and they accepted.”

During the adoption process, she and her husband told her sister that the adoption could be a temporary short-term situation, where they would only keep her daughter until she and her partner finished school and got their lives together.

However, her sister said no, still unconfident in her parenting abilities.

So, they went through an official and legal adoption process. Her sister and her partner signed away their parental rights and are now known as her daughter’s aunt and uncle.

They still visit and are involved in her daughter’s life, and they’ve been considering revealing the truth to her when she gets older.

Over the last few years, her sister and her partner have done a great job getting their act together. Her sister is about to graduate, and her sister’s partner found a well-paying job.

Then, the other night, they hit her and her husband with an unexpected request.

They invited her and her husband to dinner and asked if they could get custody of their daughter back.

“I immediately told them that wasn’t happening,” she remembered.

“Emotionally, they aren’t her parents; my husband and I are. She wouldn’t be excited to be back with her parents; she’d be wondering why we dumped her to her aunt and uncle.”

She told her sister not to get her hopes up about their daughter ever living with her again.

Her sister became distraught and told her that she and her husband were cruel, petty, and vengeful.

She was angered by her sister’s outburst and told her that she had two choices – she could either be a part of her daughter’s life solely as an aunt, or she couldn’t see her anymore.

She threatened to cut off contact with her sister and her partner if she didn’t drop the idea of regaining custody.

Her sister had a hateful look on her face but agreed to drop it. Now, she completely ignores her anytime she goes over to visit her niece.

“I don’t regret our decision; it’s just maybe I came on too strong and needlessly ruined my relationship with my sister,” she said.

Was she too harsh with her sister, or was it a good idea to give her an ultimatum?
