After the student told the professor that she wasn’t going to put her phone away, the professor claimed that he wasn’t going to continue teaching until she did. At this point, she was super angry! They had wasted so much class time on students who likely didn’t want to pay attention, to begin with, and it was unfair to the students who actually came there to learn.
So, she spoke up about how much this was affecting their class time, and the professor told her to be mad at her peers who were using their phones.
“I said yes, maybe she shouldn’t be using her phone, but it’s not a distraction. This is the distraction,” she said.
Another one of her peers said that they were going to write a report to the head of the department about how much time class was being wasted by the professor, and she agreed.
The professor ended up kicking her, the cell phone user, and the reporter out of class that day. Afterward, she helped to write a letter to submit to the people above their professor, explaining how their class time was constantly being disrupted.
She’s shared this story with other people in her life, and while some think that she is definitely in the right, others think she should have just stayed quiet and let it go. At this point, she’s not sure what else she could have done to attempt to solve the problem.
“So genuinely, how does this get fixed outside going above him?” she asked.
What do you think she should do? Do you think calling her professor out and reporting him was the right move?
