Peace Lillies are the quintessential houseplant for those of us who don’t exactly have a green thumb.

Known for its air-purifying qualities and charming white blooms, it’s often the go-to for offices, apartments, and, well, just about anywhere.

Plus, it’s about as low maintenance as they come, which is fantastic news for busy folks or those of us who tend to forget our botanical responsibilities now and then.

Still, there are certain steps you should take to care for your Peace Lily properly and ensure its longevity.

Picking The Perfect Spot

If you’ve decided to bring a Peace Lily into your life, you’ve made an excellent choice. But, the first question is where should you put it?

These blooms love bright, indirect light, but they’re not too fussy. In fact, they’ll also tolerate lower light conditions, although that might mean fewer of those lovely flowers.

Just be sure to keep them out of direct sunlight unless you want a sad, sunburned Peace Lily. Yes, plants can get sunburned too.

Watering Woes

When it comes to watering, the Peace Lily is like that friend who tells you they’re fine with whatever restaurant you pick—easygoing but has preferences.

So, the trick is to let the top inch of soil dry out before watering again. If you notice the leaves drooping a little, that’s the plant’s way of saying it could use a drink.

And when it comes to overwatering, that’s a no-go. It’s like offering someone a third slice of cake when they haven’t even finished their first. Don’t harm your plant by giving it too much of a good thing.

Feeding And Fertilizing

Contrary to what the plant food commercials might have you believe, your Peace Lily doesn’t need a five-course meal.

A simple, balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season should suffice.

In winter, your Peace Lily is on break, like a teacher during summer vacation. This essentially means it doesn’t need fertilizing, so you can give it a rest.

Get Ready To Repot

Eventually, your Peace Lily might outgrow its home, just like how we once outgrew our childhood bedrooms.

But repotting isn’t as daunting as it sounds. Every 18-24 months, just move your bloom to a new home to do the trick.

Just make sure to pick a new pot that’s about 2 inches wider in diameter than the current one to give those roots room to stretch out.

Battling Pests And Other Problems

It’s important to remember that while Peace Lilies are generally sturdy, they’re not invincible.

Sometimes, they do get visited by pests like spider mites or aphids. If you see any critters, don’t panic. A gentle shower with lukewarm water can often send those pests packing.

For more stubborn infestations, insecticidal soap is your new BFF.

Finally, if you notice brown leaf tips, that’s usually a sign you’re going too heavy on the tap water, which often contains minerals that Peace Lilies aren’t fans of. Use filtered or distilled water to keep those leaves green and gorgeous instead.
