This 26-year-old woman’s younger sister, 19, has never been financially savvy. When her sister was born, their parents were upper class and made enough money to maintain a comfortable lifestyle. Despite their parents’ best attempts to keep her sister as humble as they could, it seems that her sister doesn’t seem to realize just how privileged she is, and she lives in a bubble.

Because she’s several years older than her sister and her parents went through difficult financial times throughout the first few years of her life, she works hard to save as much money as possible.

“We’ve had a fair share of fights because I feel that she needs a reality check, and my parents are only fueling her growing sense of entitlement. Recently, my sister’s car got totaled (not her fault),” she said.

Ever since the car accident, her sister has been pressuring their parents to buy her a brand-new vehicle, and she won’t settle for anything less than a luxury vehicle. She advised her sister to instead hold off until after she graduated from college to get a new vehicle because, in her view, it wasn’t a good idea for her to own a luxury vehicle at such a young age anyway.

After providing her opinion, she let it go. Later, her sister gave her a call to let her know that after doing some research, she stumbled upon a vehicle that she loved. Their parents were going to call the car dealership and buy the car her sister picked out.

“I thought that was the end of it. The next morning, she called me crying because the car had already been sold. It turned out that my father unexpectedly got called into work and didn’t have enough time to approve the deal before the end of the day,” she explained.

Once their dad was done with work, someone else had already purchased the vehicle her sister had her eye on, and she was devastated. According to her sister, it’s their dad’s fault that her opportunity to buy the model and make that she was hoping for was ripped away from her.

Her sister and their mother could have moved forward with the purchase without their dad’s approval, but he told them to wait because he wanted to look at the deal before they agreed to it, and he needed to finish work first.

“Now, she has told him that she found another car and doesn’t care that it’s more expensive than the budget they gave her because it’s my father’s fault they’re in this situation. I told my parents that not only was she being extremely out-of-touch and spoiled, but there’s also no way a 19-year-old should be driving a $60,000 car, anyway,” she shared.

She continued, expressing to her parents that her sister is acting this way because they allowed her to have whatever she wanted, pointing out that she isn’t ready for life after college and what it will be like to be rejected or fail at something.

Her opinion must have influenced her parents because they’re now considering purchasing a used vehicle for her sister as opposed to a new one.

The oldest vehicle they would buy would be only two years old. They might not buy a luxury vehicle; instead, they would probably opt for a less expensive, more reliable car.

Since their parents began to change their minds about buying her sister a luxury vehicle, her sister hasn’t been speaking to her because she’s angry that she weighed in on the issue, claiming that she destroyed her life because she got involved in a situation that wasn’t any of her business.

What advice would you give her?
