Aligata is a case manufacturer that is all about creating Genuine, natural grain premium leather cases and bags for the MacBook Air, Pro and iPads. Their cases are hand-made using fine premium, natural thick, genuine bovine leather and are minimalist in design with a sleek yet refined look.
We tested out the Premium Leather iPad 2 sleeve in Nude Beauty, but it’s also available in a choice of Nippon or Black Espresso. The case is very simple. To that effect, if you’re looking for a sleek case with a fine amount of protection this is it. The leather does feel like high quality and the case is designed so that you can easily slip your iPad in and out of it. Yet at the same time, the iPad stays inside of it with a secure, and very snug fit.
Aligata also makes leather envelope-style cases for the iPad 2, iPad 1 and MacBook Air 11-inch. The selection of nice-looking MacBook Air 11-inch and 13-inch cases out there are very slim, so Aligata’s envelope design is very welcome as it offers a refined touch of class to carry your MacBook Air in. We tried out the Nippon leather envelope case, although it’s also available in Black Espresso. Personally, I’m not so crazy about the case’s coloring and would wholeheartedly prefer the Espresso black version of the case for its more classic look. Also, the Nippon leather tends to pick up dirt marks. That said, the Nippon leather does age gracefully and seems to pick up more character with age.
Overall, Aligata’s iPad 2 and MacBook Air cases are both high quality leather cases. The Bovine leather from Aligata has more character than ordinary leather because it hasn’t been artificially treated, and instead it shows off the original minor imperfections of untreated, natural grain leather. These case designs are hardly clever or fancy, but they are refined and slim. Aligata’s iPad 2 Sleeves retail for $59.90 each and the MacBook Air Envelope for $89.90. The cases all come with a three year warranty.
The Good: High quality cases made of fine bovine leather, slim designs, 3 years warranty
The Bad: Nippon and Nude Beauty leather picks up dirt easily, uninspiring designs
