In case you haven’t heard, we now have 4K televisions, mainly because television manufacturers needed a new catchy buzzword to sell units, and HD wasn’t cutting it anymore.
In addition to telling you that this is the “next big thing” and that you should buy it right away, 4K means resolution approaching or exceeding 4,000 pixels. In the case of the Sony XBR-84V900, 4K means a 3840 x 2160 resolution LCD screen. Oh, and by the way, the screen in question is 84 inches.
In addition to 4K resolution, which will apply to all content regardless of source thanks to the 4K X-Reality PRO picture engine, the television will include 3D glasses for 3D viewing that will exceed the clarity found in most Full HD televisions.
The mammoth television will be packing brain power, too. This will be a smart TV, capable of connecting to a Wi-Fi network and accessing apps via the Sony Entertainment Network Suite. Users will be able to use their smartphones or tablets as remotes using a free app.
The XBR-84V900 will also pack in its own 5.1 surround sound system, courtesy of a 10 Unit Live Speaker system. Sony is aiming to provide an all-in-one home theater experience with this television. 4K resolution screens are being used at movie theaters nationwide, so it would seem Sony is taking the home theater idea literally with this one.
Sony is promising that the XBR-84V900 will be available sometime this year, but we have no pricing details yet. We do have a pretty good guess, though – a lot. It’s going to cost a lot of money.
