Epson Expression Photo XP-850 Small-in-One Printer Review

The Epson Expression Photo XP-850 Small-in-One Printer takes cues from Epson’s successful Artisan series, as well as their newer small-in-one printer series. In essence, this printer really brings together the best of both worlds. You’re getting a capable all-in-one printer with cutting edge features, all in a body that won’t take up much footprint on your desk. It’s also got a sophisticated and sleek black design that allows it to blend in to an environment much better than most printers can.

When it comes to features, the XP-850 packs in everything but the kitchen sink. It of-course prints, scans, copies, faxes, and prints photos. Photos look amazing when printed on photo paper with vivid, smooth and true to life colors that pop. These excellent photo prints are thanks to Claria Photo HD 6-color inks. That said, color graphics printed on regular paper is not nearly as impressive, as it really takes a fine paper stock to bring out the best in photos and graphics. On average, 4 x 6 photos take about a minute to print.

In any case, other features include 2 sided printing, a print to cd function, a 30-page automatic document feeder, built in memory card slots, wireless and ethernet connectivity, and support for printing wirelessly from your iOS device via AirPrint, Wi-Fi Direct support and also Google Cloud Print support.

And like with the previous EPSON Expression Home XP-400 Small-in-One we tested, setting up the 850 is a cinch. No software is required and you’ll be up and running with wireless printing on your network within just a few minutes! Epson has made it a breeze to set up your printer on both Mac and PC. Look ma, no lengthy installations required!

The printer runs on six individual ink cartridges, which are available in different capacities. We found the cartridge capacities to be better lasting than previous Epson all-in-ones that we have test. And thankfully, only an individual color cartridge needs to be replaced at a time.

Epson has also upgraded the touchscreen on this model to a large 3.5″ display. This generously sized touchscreen sports an improved user interface which is very tablet-like and easy to use.

Verdict

Sure you can pick up a more affordable All-in-one printer out there, but the Epson Expression Photo XP-850 Small-in-One Printer is a premium all-in-one printer that packs in a lot of features, all despite its compact footprint. The Epson Expression Photo XP-850 can be found for as low as $249 on Amazon.

The Good: Tons of features, super easy setup and installation, wireless network support, AirPrint support for iOS devices, compact footprint, produces fast drying beautiful photo prints, sleek black design, 3.5″ touchscreen is large with intuitive user interface, cartridges seem to yield a nice capacity for prints, automatic document feeder, main paper tray holds up to 100 sheets – which is nice for such a compact printer

The Bad: Not the most affordable all-in-one printer out there, not the best quality for text prints
