DaVinci IQ Vaporizer Review

This vaporizer might be a little too hot for its own good.

The highly anticipated IQ is the latest portable vaporizer from DaVinci. The IQ promises to deliver best-in-class purity, innovation and control. So is the IQ ready to join the ranks of other high-end vaporizers? Keep reading to get the full scoop.

If an iPhone and a stun gun had a love child, it would look like the DaVinci IQ. Weighing in at five ounces, the IQ ignores the trend of designing vaporizers to be as small and light as possible. The IQ also sports a 51-LED light grid and a beautiful metal anodized aluminum finish. Unfortunately, the finish was easily nicked and scratched.

Five quick presses of the control button illuminate the LED grid display as the IQ begins heating up. A strong vibration accompanies the startup sequence and repeats when the vape is ready to use. Upon powering on the device, there was a noticeable rapid ticking noise. DaVinci confirms that this worrisome sound comes from the battery and is part of normal operation.

There are three different modes available when using the DaVinci IQ: Smart Path, Precision and Boost. Smart Path includes four profiles that slowly heat to a specified temperature over a few minutes. Precision mode is exactly what it sounds like — the ability to dial in a precise temperature. Boost mode raises the temperature to 430° F by holding down the control button during use.

Two zirconia (ceramic steel) mouthpieces accompany the IQ. The flush mounted mouthpiece feels very natural placed against your lips while inhaling. The stem mouthpiece, which can also be used with a water pipe, provides better airflow than the flush mounted option. Additionally, storing extra herbs in the removable zirconia flavor cartridge enhance the vapor’s flavor.

Loading herbs into the IQ is incredibly easy. Beneath the bottom lid is the glass-coated ceramic heating chamber. Surrounding the chamber is a mirror finish that functions as a built-in funnel. Attached to the lid is a zirconia pearl that reflects heat inwards to assist in evenly cooking the tightly packed herbs. Shut the magnetic lid and crank the heat up to enjoy some mighty clean-tasting vapor.

Flipping open the mouthpiece lid gives access to the removable/replaceable 3500 mAh battery. A full charge takes 3.5 hours using a micro USB connection. Unfortunately, the IQ’s short 1.5-hour battery life requires the vape to be recharged daily. The battery generates a great amount of heat, so much so that the device shut off multiple times during testing.

A lot of today’s high-end vaporizers are Bluetooth-enabled and include a mobile app for controlling the device via smartphone. The DaVinci app gives control of various functions including usage tracking, Smart Path customization, specifying exact temperatures and enabling stealth mode. Sadly, the IQ’s overheating battery causes the Bluetooth connection to drop out, resulting in a poor user experience.
