The Mophie Powerstation line of external battery packs is getting a refresh this week, and in case you were wondering, it’s definitely Mophie that has decided to become the Apple of battery packs. The new packs look like they could’ve leaped out of Jony Ive’s notebook, with sleek builds and aluminum finishes that make them look like iPhones without displays.
This time, Mophie is making their naming scheme a little more obvious for everyone in the market for extra battery power — the Powerstation 1x, 2x, 3x, 5x, and 8x all refer to about how many times you’ll be able to use that pack to charge an iPhone. Specifically, those five battery packs have capacities of 2,000 mAh, 4,000 mAh, 6,000 mAh, 10,000 mAh, and 15,000 mAh, respectively, so maybe we got a little shorted on that 8x pack.
There are a few extras on some of the packs. The 5x and 8x packs will work with the Mophie Power app, which lets users monitor remaining battery life of both their smartphones and their Powerstations and get alerts if one or the other is running low. If the two are connected, the app will display how much time will be needed to fully charge the smartphone. Also limited to the 5x and 8x is 15-watt fast-charging. All Powerstations except the 1x will have pass-through charging capabilities — if a smartphone is plugged into the Powerstation while the Powerstation is charging on a wall outlet, the smartphone’s battery will be charged first.
Pretty nice, but the Apple act unfortunately extends to price. The new Powerstations cost $40, $60, $80, $130, and $150 according to capacity, making them some of the most expensive battery packs on the market. But, if your accessories absolutely need to match your phone, look no further.
