MetroPCS, the prepaid, discount arm of T-Mobile, is getting a new family plan for those looking for 4G LTE data for the whole family, and it’s not looking too bad. Starting now, you can start a family plan with two lines, both getting unlimited talk, text, and data plus 6 GB of 4G LTE data each, for $60 per month. Up to five additional lines can be added to the plan for $30 per month.
The only caveat is that you must port a number from another carrier. If you don’t, the deal is still pretty good — each line just gets 3 GB of 4G LTE data instead of 6 GB. Currently, MetroPCS offers an individual plan with unlimited everything plus 3 GB of 4G LTE data for $40 per month. For a family of four, that would be $160 per month. With the family plan, getting the same amount of 4G LTE data would cost $120 per month, and that data would be doubled if just one line is ported over.
You can’t pool the data, which is kind of a bummer — the family plan is more like a group of individual plans than a true family plan. But, if you can get on the 6 GB plan, that’s most likely going to be enough, especially considering that MetroPCS members are in on T-Mobile’s Music Unlimited and BingeOn programs, which allow for streaming of music and video without counting it against your data cap. MetroPCS is saying the offer will be available for a limited time, but we don’t know when time will be up.
