Hollywood going wild for remakes is nothing new, but it seems like the pace is always picking up! We’ve got Disney in the midst of doing live-action remakes for their animated films, we get loads of horror remakes every year — they even remade Ben-Hur that one time! It’s enough to make us wonder which of our geeky favorites they haven’t remade.
Turns out, there’s still quite a few! A lot of these have been at the center of discussions, though, so we have to wonder just how many of these movies will go on untouched.
Sounds like the phones have been cold when it comes to E.T. Steven Spielberg’s 1982 alien classic might just have the perfect confluence of factors preventing it from being remade. Spielberg himself decided against even a sequel back in the ’80s, and it’s hard to imagine a remake could ever be done without his blessing (which, by most accounts, he won’t give). Considering that so much of the movie’s enduring charm is based on its heart and practical effects, it’s hard to see what new could be brought to E.T. today.
The Princess Bride
To remake The Princess Bride, you’d need to make sure “You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means” and “Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die” are delivered at least as well, if not better, than in the original. Good luck with that.
Something to watch for: this is another movie Disney would snag if they actually bought up the parts of Fox that they’re looking into.
