She Asked Her Husband’s Sister To Make Her A Birthday Cake That She Can Actually Eat, And She’s Wondering If That Makes Her A Spoiled Brat
A woman in her 30s celebrated her birthday not too long ago, and her husband decided that he wanted to throw her a little party with their loved ones.
She and her husband actually live with his sister and mom right now, as her husband’s dad just passed away.
“My SIL insisted on making me a cake, which was very nice of her considering her health and mobility issues,” she explained.
“She asked what flavor of cake I like, and I told her. And reminded her of my dietary restrictions (definitely not a choice or preference).”
She isn’t able to eat butter, milk, or even gluten. Over the years, she’s found a way to substitute the ingredients she cannot eat, and she always keeps things on hand for her to use instead when cooking or baking.
She even offered to help her sister-in-law make the substitutions to the birthday cake that she needed.
Her sister-in-law did remember that she can’t have one of those ingredients, though her sister-in-law did forget about another one.
“She seemed to get upset that my restrictions limited what kind of cake she could make but said she’d see what she could do,” she continued.
“I told her I have the supplies that meet my restrictions, so she didn’t have to buy them. I also offered to just buy a dessert I could eat so I wouldn’t inconvenience her (or anyone else).”
Her sister-in-law then discussed her dietary restrictions with her husband, and her sister-in-law asked him how bad it would be for her if she did eat any of those ingredients that she can’t have.
In case you are wondering if she does end up eating butter, milk, or gluten, she suffers from terrible stomach problems for days, and she also gets headaches, joining pain, and brain fog. It takes her some time to feel like she’s bad to her normal self if she does consume any of these things.
So anyway, back to the cake. When her sister-in-law questioned her husband about her dietary needs, her sister-in-law maintained that she couldn’t bake a cake that was completely in line with this.
Her husband did fill her in on this and then told her she would be a jerk if she didn’t take a tiny bite of the cake at the party. Her husband thought she should suck it up and be nice to his sister, even if it meant making herself really sick in the process.
“I took a small bite at the party and got sick that evening,” she said. “I got a separate cake for everyone else to enjoy since not everyone has the same restrictions as me. I wasn’t able to eat any of the other desserts.”
“Part of me worries that I’m…a spoiled brat for wanting food I could eat, and the other part of me feels that because it was my birthday, I should have had a dessert I could fully enjoy without worrying that I could get sick.”
She’s left wondering if she really was a spoiled brat for wanting to eat a birthday cake that wouldn’t impact her health. Do you think it was mean of her to want that?
