But after several hours of hearing his roommate’s wife ranting about how difficult it was being a stay-at-home mother, he told her to get a job if she was so sick of staying home raising a child.
Right away, she was offended and questioned who would watch her son while she was working.
“I then said, ‘Maybe you should hire the neighbor’s daughter to watch the kid while you’re at work. She’s what, 12? 13? Plenty old enough to be able to take care of a toddler without even having to change out of her pajamas,” he explained.
When he said this, his roommate’s wife interpreted it as a jab at her, which was exactly how he meant it. But he doesn’t know if it was fair in hindsight.
Despite whether or not his comments went too far, he couldn’t ignore the fact that she was ranting to them after they’d just gotten home from a 12-hour shift, while their hands were visibly bleeding, their clothes were covered in grease, and they were drenched in sweat.
It just seemed ironic to him that he and his roommate were clearly physically exhausted, and she was complaining about how stressed and tired she was.
During the conversation, she was hoping that he and his roommate would watch her son so that she could relax.
At least twice a week, without him agreeing to it, she and his roommate would leave their son with him so that they could hang out alone together.
Plus, he sometimes had to be the one to enforce discipline on their son because they didn’t do so. Their son often didn’t even listen to his roommate or his roommate’s wife but respected his authority. When the child’s parents needed him to listen to their rules, they would request that he reason with their son.
“She did nothing all day but feed the kid chicken nuggets and play Paw Patrol for him while she scrolled through TikTok (that isn’t an exaggeration–that is literally what she told us she did). And yet, she wanted us to listen to how hard of a day she had had and immediately dismissed any complaints we had about our jobs. And when I broke the news to her that, hey, maybe putting on Netflix and microwaving chicken nuggets isn’t the hardest thing in the world, she freaked out on me,” he shared.
She then started sobbing hysterically and got up and raced to her bedroom.
