SpecTec’s MicroSD Card with Wifi

Sandiskfinger
Just a few years ago I remember how cool I thought it was when I bought a
compact flash wifi adapter for my ipaq. I marveled at how they managed to fit
wifi into such a tiny little card. Then Secure Digital cards became more
prevailant and some company came out with an SD card with wifi built in. Once
again, I marvelled at this new feat of technology. Some time later I got my
first smartphone with a mini SD slot. When i discovered that there was a miniSD
card with wifi, I could barely believe that it was true. Surely, nothing could
get smaller then these miniSD cards… and to fit wifi into one? How did they do
it?
MicrosdwifiA few weeks ago I got myself the Samsung i320n Windows Smartphone, which
I am in love with by the way. I ordered a MicroSD card for it. When it arrived i
almost choked when i saw the chicklet sized MicroSD card that managed to fit
1Gig inside of it. For the hell of it I decided to google "MicroSD with wifi", and lo and behold I dicovered that Spectec has MicroSD cards with 802.11b/g. I am
speechless. Then again in a world where RFID chips are the size of a piece of
rice, should anything amaze me anymore?

    SpecTec MicroSD Card with WiFi

Remember quite some time ago when the Compact Flash card came with an integrated WiFi adapter? Times have certainly changed, when the WiFi adapter function made its way into Secure Digital cards, and thanks to the wonders of miniaturization, this…

any idea on the price…i’ve seen some of the old cf wifi cards on ebay still for 80-90 bucks. Will it be worth the risk if i find out that it doesn’t work for my bj?

  8. EagerlyAwaiting on September 11th, 2007 6:03 am

Well its been a year since the news of the micro sd wifi card first came out. I was one of the first ones to get myself the Blackjack when Cingular released it in early fall last year. And I am still waiting. Is spectec going to release it ever? Or should we give up waiting.

Also, are there any other alternatives? Has anyone had a chance to use and test it yet? anyways, the wait continues.

  9. bill weaver on September 11th, 2007 12:17 pm

I haven’t been able to find it or get a specific price yet. Granted, I haven’t looked in the last couple weeks… when I contacted them a few months ago, they said August. With the normal delays, I guess it’d be a good time to start looking again. Of course, I’m on my second Blackjack and it acts flakey too. Sigh.

I emailed them today to see a possible release date and where it will be available for purchase. I’ll post again when they reply.

  11. Cory G on September 17th, 2007 11:40 pm

    “Dear Sir
It will take another few months

    BR
    S.T”

That’s the reply I received today. Hopefully they won’t say the same thing in a few months..

  12. Cory G on September 19th, 2007 2:29 am

Since I emailed a couple email addresses on the Spectec website I got a couple answers. I like the new message better:

    “Dear Sir:

The SDW-823 of micro sd wlan card will be released in October, we’ll inform you by then, all of our products you may purchase from here directly, thank you for your attention.

    Best Regards”

So hopefully no more delays and we will have wifi on our wifiless phones soon!

  13. too good to be true? on September 25th, 2007 6:15 am

I just caught wind of this idea, with my recent purchase of the Samsung BJ under ATT. However I’ve noticed in my searches, that this was announced almost a year ago.

2 thoughts come to mind. 1. Why is this random (no-name) company the only ones who are claiming this solution, I would have thought SanDisk or some other communications or NAND manufacturer would have been also to capitalize on this idea by now. 2. Perhaps they are having trouble maintaining their “claims” 9-11 months after anouncement of developement seems like a long time….

Not a big proponent of using my smart phones Data plans, I am in huge favor of using Wifi….

Just got a BJ II also and hpe when it comes out it works. The 3g does not work where I am, but I love this phone(and I had an iphone before). If anyone finds out the release date please post. Thanks

  18. elaina on January 16th, 2008 6:24 am

its still not out yet right??? would love to buy one!!

  19. KipMudson on January 25th, 2008 7:49 am

I too have a blackjack. I was not very impressed by its constant dropped calls and whatnot. But overall it’s a pretty good phone. (really tough too, I’ve dropped it many a time :D)
Anyhow, I was wondering if there will be charges for internet use through the provider? In other words, will I be charged as if I was browsing the web on my phone?

  20. blacki607jack on January 25th, 2008 4:08 pm

Hey kip, if you plan to use the web browser on the blackjack you should get an unlimited data plan. I have a blackjack because i liked my co-workers and i have unlimited. it comes in handy sometimes. my co-worker ended up dropping his data plan to a specific monthly rate for x amount of megabites and he ended up going over. his overage charge on data got him a bill of 250 dollars when he thought he was going to save by down grading his plan. our plans are normally about 80 bucks a month with employee discounts.

  21. KipMudson on January 25th, 2008 6:16 pm

Yeah, I would like to get the unlimited data plan, but 80$ is a lot for a college student D: Thanks for the information though!

  22. Jerry on April 23rd, 2008 4:58 am

Well I can’t find any Micro SD WiFi cards for sale. Any one have one yet?

  23. Tim on April 23rd, 2008 5:37 am

Wow. this idea is still alive. I have the Black Jack first series, and I would have thought for sure that the BlackJack II would have come with WIFI support built-in. Now Samsung either ran out of space (which with ALL of the other buttons / and communication options) I find hard to belive.
OR built-in WIFI was left out intentionally so that you would be forced to be dependant on either ATT EDGE or 3G data network.

So I really have to ask: Do you really think they will manufacture this card? I seriously have my doubts. Last time I googled Micro SD Wifi cards (09/07) this site, and articles referencing this compahy were there only hits. (maybe things have changed)
I had to lay my bets, I’d call this a red herring idea.

  24. Kelvin Vine on April 23rd, 2008 12:03 pm

It does not look like this card is ever going to be manufactured. I have moved on to a Sony Ericsson P1 wihich has Wi-Fi built in and doesnt use micro-sd anyway.
It seems that the micro-sd form is just too small to fit wi-fi inside.
Pehaps phone manufacturers who want to add upgradability (why would they do that anyway because then you wont buy new phones) need to go back to the slightly larger mini-SD.

  25. bill weaver on April 26th, 2008 5:28 pm

Just heard from them last week. Apparently there will be several more months of delays to get the Spectec microsd wi-fi card. Oh well.

  26. EDWARD BLANCO on May 5th, 2008 7:55 pm

WHICH WIFI IS BEST FOR AN IPHONE OR P168+?
HOW MANY GB OF MEMORY DOES IT HOLD?

  27. Jerry on May 6th, 2008 3:52 pm

So, will this card have extra memory on it too or do we have to sacrafice memory for wifi?

Got something to say?
