Android App of the Week: Vonage Mobile Brings Calls and Text on the Cheap
Vonage Mobile is Vonage’s new VOIP app that is taking aim at Skype, and doing a pretty good job of it. Vonage Mobile lets users make calls without using their regular calling plan, like Skype. Unlike Skype, Vonage mobile enables texting and lets users use their regular phone number for all calls, so the person on the receiving end can actually tell it’s you who is calling them. The app works over both Wi-Fi and 3G/4G connections, though you need a 3G/4G connection during the verification process. Unfortunately, that means you can’t download and use it without a calling plan already in place. The app also uses your existing address book, similar to Skype.
There is no Bluetooth support yet, and the app can be a major data hog and cause for concern if you don’t have an unlimited data plan with your carrier, but the very competitive rates (which outshine Skype’s) and ease of use (all transactions are in-app purchases) make this an app to keep an eye on. Vonage Mobile available now on the Android Market for free, and does not require a Vonage account to use.
