Looking for a better way to burn your tobacco (ahem *wacky baccy?) Sick of pipes, cigarettes and the like? With their easy to load cartridges and promises of a smoke free world. vaporizers might be just what you’re looking for. Vaporizers “heat” herbs/ tobacco, rather than burn them, so what you get is purer and filtered. The Pax by Ploom has an impressive reputation, with a string of awards, but would it live up to the hype for our tests?
What’s in the box
The Pax by Ploom is an aluminum vaporizer that looks like something that you could almost find in an Apple store. Sleek, small and attractively designed, the four colorways, (black, green, purple and blue ) bring up associations of the first generation of Apple Nano’s that make you feel like you might be about to inhale through an iPod. The box includes the Pax, a charging stand, an instruction guide and some tools to clean it with.
The Charging process
The Pax uses a lithium ion battery and rests upright on its charging stand. The Pax also has four small lights on the side which flash red and orange while it juices up. Once it’s refueled, it glows green and this will then let you have a couple of hours play. Furthermore, the Pax is smart – if it’s turned on but not being puffed on, it will automatically go into snooze mode until you use it again to conserve energy. It does get very hot though once you’ve been using it for more than 10 minutes, so be careful with bare skin.
The Smoke Experience
The Pax provides a very smooth “smoke” experience. It quickly vaporizes the tobacco, and lets you know when it’s ready to consume with a smart heating sensor that flashes red and orange while working, and then green to know the product is ready to consume. To vape, you take a drag- short or long- on the mouthpiece and inhale. However, exhaling is where it gets a little strange – for those unfamiliar with vaporizers – no “smoke” actually comes out, but rather a stream of vapor with a delicious scent.
There are three heat settings for the Pax, which are accessible by removing the mouthpiece and pressing down. To load the chamber with product, you simply press the side of the bottom to pop out the lid, and then fill it in with product. The other end of the Pax has the mouthpiece, which can be kept tucked into the Pax till its use. To turn it on, press down on the mouthpiece till it pops out and the Pax will automatically turn on and start heating up its loading chamber.
The Pax by Ploom provides a very smooth and convenient “smoke” experience that comes in a stylish but rather petite package. You can pick it up for $249.99.
The Good: The Pax offers convenient vaping on the move in a stylishly small package. It heats up very quickly and the vapor that’s inhaled is smooth and easy on the throat.
The Bad: The Pax can get extremely hot after it has been used for a while, so take care with how long you use it for. We also found that occasionally the Pax mouthpiece would get a little “stuck” when trying to close the device. (Note: The trick is to tap it shut, not to hold it down).
