Yeah, we’re doing this again. Here’s your latest helping of Apple smartwatch rumors, although this report from Reuters (along with a few new iOS 8 additions) suggests that this year might be the year the rumors prove true.
The report says that Quanta Computer Inc, based in Taiwan, will start production of Apple’s new smartwatch in July ahead of a planned October release. The source cited in the report described the watch as having a 2.5″ touch display with wireless charging, although which standard they will use between Qi and PMA is anyone’s guess, since Apple hasn’t gotten on the wireless charging bandwagon up until now.
Otherwise, from the report, we’re looking at just another smartwatch. It’ll probably work exclusively with iOS devices, and will be more of a companion device designed for the new iPhone that will no doubt also be released later this year. The new smartwatch will likely have fitness tracking capabilities, too – at this year’s WWDC, we saw Health, a new fitness app that will be coming with the iOS 8 update. Apple’s new gadget would probably mimic what the Galaxy Gear does for Galaxy smartphones – a notification center and fitness tracker, with a few standalone functions thrown in.
All that said, I’m sure Apple has some surprises in store, too. We’ll find out for sure sometime this fall – until then, speculate away!
