Fixes for Newly Discovered CPU Security Flaws Could Slow Down Majority of Computers Made in the Past Decade

The next time you update your Mac or PC, you might notice your computer running a lot slower — and it won’t be a mistake. Security researchers have discovered two security exploits made possible by the way operating systems like MacOS and Windows interact with CPUs from Intel, ARM, and AMD. Patches are expected shortly, but researchers warn that to fix these security flaws, computers may need to be slowed as a result.

So, is your new PC about to start running like something from two years ago? Possibly not — while the security flaws themselves are concerning, it’s possible that most of us won’t notice any of the residual slowdown, especially given that researchers are saying effects will vary by processor. Either way, it’s hard to not be in awe at such a widespread dropping of the ball — let’s see how we got here!
