One Woman’s Tweet Apparently Inspired Lizzo’s Famous Song “Truth Hurts” & Now She’s Getting A Songwriter Credit

I know I don’t need to introduce you to the hit song from Lizzo, “Truth Hurts,” but I am going to probably need to introduce you to the woman behind the tweet that apparently inspired this famous song.

That’s right, someone on the internet is crying plagiarism, and here’s the inside scoop.

Instagram; Lizzo shared this photo with the caption, “IF WE STREAM TRUTH HURTS ONE MORE WEEK… WE WILL TIE W/ FANCY FOR LONGEST FEMALE RAP #1 OF ALL TIME”

Mina Lioness, a British singer and performer, tweeted on February 25th of 2017, “I did a DNA test and found out I’m 100% that b*tch,” which you can see below.

Lizzo dropped “Truth Hurts” just seven months after Mina made this tweet, which went somewhat viral on Twitter, as you can see with the stats below the post.

In the opening lines for “Truth Hurts” Lizzo sings, “I just took a DNA test, turns out I’m 100% that b*tch.”

So, as you can see, those lyrics are definitely pretty similar to Mina’s tweet, and honestly, they make the whole song. However, when Mina confronted Lizzo on social media about the alleged plagiarism, Lizzo vehemently denied it.

In a tweet that has since been deleted, Lizzo fought back against Mina’s claim, saying, “I’ve never seen this before in my life. That’s crazy.”

Mina, of course, fired back, and Lizzo replied with, “But u know, there’s 10 BILLION ppl on the planet. The odds of multiple people having the same idea are VERY high. The odds of multiple ppl putting it in song w/ millions of streams are low tho. Nothin new under the sun.”

There is a lot more back and forth than just that, with Mina insisting Lizzo stole her lyrics because she can’t legally fight back.

“They’re doing it because they know I have no capital to address her,” Mina tweeted. “I’m just the poor Black girl from London that don’t have a dog in the fight.”

People on Twitter freaked out and definitely had some things to say to Lizzo, insisting she give credit where credit is due.

Eventually, Lizzo changes her tune and owns up to Mina inspiring her. You can see what hasn’t been deleted in the tweetstorm, below.

Just days ago, Mina has been added as a songwriter on “Truth Hurts.” Lizzo took to Instagram to share more about this, with the caption, “Truth Hurts…but the truth shall set you free.”
