Seagate Backup Plus Portable Drive Review

chipchickpick1Seagate’s Backup Plus Portable Drive is all about packing in a lot of storage, in a compact body. Because lets face it, 1TB and 2TB just isn’t enough anymore – photos and video files alone can accumulate really quickly. In any case, the drive measures just 78.00mm wide, 114.50mm and it weighs just 541g. It’s definitely not the most compact hard drive out there, but considering the capacity, it’s quite compact and will easily stow in your bag without adding too much weight to it. The device is also bus powered, so there is no need to carry along a dedicated power cable.

In addition to the 4TB of storage, Seagate has also thrown in a great cloud storage freebie, so that each drive purchase includes 2-year, 200GB access to OneDrive which is a $95 value.

When it comes to performance, the drive comes with a USB 3.0 cable. We ran benchmarks and saw very good write speeds of 146MB/s and read speeds of 150 MB/s.

Seagate Dashboard backup software provides users with a backup solution for PCs. But the software also doubles as a great way to back up your social media account data and files. The app now supports Facebook, Flickr and YouTube. And the latest version of the software is easier to use than ever.

Seagate recently acquired Lyve, so it’s no surprise that they recommend opening a Lyve account. Lyve is able to centralize all of your photos and videos from different locations into one account. Then the Lyve app let you access and share all your videos via a mobile app or your computer.  And if you have the Backup Plus Portable Drive, or another Seagate Backup Plus device, you can add it to your Lyve account to use as a backup device for all the photos and videos stored in your Lyve account.

It’s important to note that all of the apps mentioned above had to be downloaded from Seagate’s web site. To that effect, when we plugged in our drive into a Mac, and ran the “Set Up” app, it directed us to the Seagate web site. We actually prefer this method because it means no matter when you set up the drive, you’ll be using the latest version of the software for the drive.

Overall, Seagate’s Backup Plus Portable Drive is a solid portable hard drive that offers plenty of storage and good performance. But if you need more speed, we recommend checking out Seagate’s Backup Plus Fast Portable Drive. In any case, if you’re looking for a portable drive that can hold a lot of data for backups and general file storage, the 4TB Backup Plus Portable Drive will be a great choice for most users. You can pick up the drive for $188 on Amazon.

The Good: Large capacity despite a compact design, truly both Mac and PC friendly, comes with 200GB free cloud storage, good performance, Seagate mobile app lets you back up your phone to the drive, backup software is easy to use.

The Bad: Not the most exciting design – than again – it is just a hard drive.
