There’s a lot that has to go right to make it happen, but it’s more than in the realm of possibility — a new Tomb Raider film franchise could have Star Wars: The Force Awakens star Daisy Ridley as Lara Croft. That’s a whole lot of pop culture pressure to shoulder!
What seems certain is that the reboot movie in some form will happen. Now that the video game franchise has been restarted successfully following the 2013 release of Tomb Raider and last year’s Rise of the Tomb Raider, Hollywood is warming up to Lara once again. It’s worth remembering that, regardless of how you felt about the two Tomb Raider movies starring Angelina Jolie, they were successful — the first was a hit, while the second dragged at the box office a bit but eventually made its budget back. That second movie also came as the video game franchise was entering its lull. With the video game side back in full swing, the timing seems right.
Warner Bros. and MGM are working on producing the movie, with Deadline reporting that Daisy Ridley is among the actresses being considered for the role of Lara Croft. That makes us wonder — not much is known about the creative direction of the new movie, but if they’re going younger, it sounds like the movie version of Lara could parallel the Lara of the recent games. Or, who knows? With Quantum Break bringing us the first modern TV show/video game hybrid, we might just see film and video game franchises intertwine in some pretty surprising ways. It would take a lot of cooperation between disparate actors, but if the Hollywood’s people can get together with Square Enix’ and Crystal Dynamics’ people, something special might happen. Might be wishful thinking, but we do a lot of that around here.
