He Really Thinks That His Girlfriend’s Cat Is Ruining Their Relationship

A guy has been dating his girlfriend for several years, and not that long ago, they purchased a house.
He’s in the middle of getting ready for their big move to their house, and he’s excited for all the projects they can work on to really make their home their own.
One thing he’s really not thrilled about with though is having to continue living under the same roof as his girlfriend’s cat.
He has known the cat for about as long as he has known his girlfriend, and the cat turned into a monster as soon as they began living together.
Now, he does have a dog, so initially, he and his girlfriend figured that his dog was bothering her cat.
Although they had never witnessed his dog doing anything mean to the cat, they thought it was best to just be cautious and separate them.
His girlfriend took his lofted space that he was using as a project area to make that the cat room.
“Because the cat has problems with jumping onto things like counters and tables and scratching at everything despite having every cat toy in the world, I had to move all of my projects and workspace into a separate storage area,” he explained.
“This is when I realized this cat was ruining my relationship with my girlfriend. I started to resent it.”

“My girlfriend knows I need my own private space as does she. We specifically get 3 bedrooms so that we both have our own individual space and then a space that we share.”
He went from having his own private space to having nowhere to be by himself. Aside from that, his girlfriend’s cat went to the bathroom all over the carpet in the loft and they had to remove it and buy a new one.
Their entire apartment started smelling, even after replacing the carpet.
He’s seriously concerned that when he and his girlfriend move into their new home, that cat will ruin the whole thing since the cat will not be confined to her own room anymore.
There is just no place in his new house that will work for confining his girlfriend’s cat, and he’s really mad about that.
He’s disgusted and annoyed by his girlfriend’s cat. He’s not only upset with the cat however; he’s finding that he’s upset with his girlfriend as well.
“I don’t want the cat able to roam the house, peeing, scratching, and shedding everywhere but it’s also not fair to feel that way about an animal I know,” he said.
“But it’s so unfair. I don’t want my house to reek like this cat. I don’t want to come home and find the cat on my kitchen counter being disgusting. I don’t want to see litter boxes everywhere because the cat decides to use everything as a toilet.”
He used to really love cats before he met his girlfriend, but her cat has made him hate all cats in general.
He did address the issue of the cat in the new house with his girlfriend, who thinks it’s perfectly fine to confine the cat to their closet.
He’s not ok with that suggestion, since he knows the cat will ruin his clothing and shoes as well. He ended up simply shutting down when his girlfriend made that suggestion.
“I don’t know how to explain to her I don’t want this without sounding selfish but I have standards of cleanliness that this cat does not fit into,” he continued.
How can he let his girlfriend know that keeping the cat in a closet is not a solution here?
