If you have ever been on a first date, the odds are that it took place in a restaurant. Many people have had fantastic dinner dates, while others live to tell horrifying tales filled with red flags.

Still, most people often forget about the third-party observer who watches your night either soar to romance or crash and burn– hard.

One Reddit user named StickyRice4 was particularly interested in the perspective of waiters and waitresses who encounter first dates on the daily.

The user asked waiters and waitresses of the Reddit community to recall the worst first date they had ever witnessed. And, their stories are far from disappointing.

This Guy Got “Handsy”– Literally

“A couple in their mid-twenties came in, and it was obviously their first date. But, they seemed to really like each other and got along well.”

“I was serving the table next to them when, about halfway through their meal, I noticed them holding hands over the table. Cute. Then, the guy lifted her hand to his lips and kissed the back of it. A bit of an outdated gesture, but still cute, I guess. The woman also seemed slightly confused but went along with it.”

“A little while later, I saw the guy do it again. Then again. The woman was confused and looked a little uncomfortable. They were no longer holding hands.”

“Finally, I went to serve my table and saw the dude full-on making out with her hand– tongue and all. The woman looked extremely embarrassed and uncomfortable– looking everywhere but her date.”

“I went over and casually asked if they needed anything, and the dude stopped. The woman yanked her hand back and left soon after.”

This Poor Man Got An Earful

“A young guy had a reservation for six and came in a few minutes early. He told me he was kind of nervous because it was a first date, and he had not been on many before. It was sweet, really.”

“Anyway, the girl arrived about half an hour late and proceeded to get very, very drunk. About mid-way through the meal, she answered her phone and started talking about her date right in front of her date.”

“She said things like, ‘Well, he’s not usually my type. I don’t exactly like him, but I felt like why not?'”

“The young man looked so discouraged. He walked up to me, paid his bill, and left.”

This Server Witnessed A Catfish Encounter

“There was a young guy eating dinner with his mom. I noticed that they seemed weirdly uncomfortable and distant, but I did not think much of it.”

“It turned out that the lady was not his mom. He had met her on a dating site and was very clearly catfished. The lady was at least twenty years older than him.”

“When she left the restaurant, he stayed behind and told me about what happened. Then, he asked me out. I politely declined but agreed that he had been in a bizarre situation.”

This Woman’s Date Brought Along His Childish Hobby

“A couple of years ago, I was tending bar at a high-end steak joint. A pretty brunette walked in and sat at the bar. After fixing her a cocktail, I asked if she would like to see a dinner menu. Then, she explained that she was waiting for a date.”

“A few moments later, the guy arrived. He was carrying a large bag which he carefully sat down next to him.”

“It was immediately obvious this was their first date. Their conversation was lurching from forced to downright painful. Then, he reached into the bag and pulled out an album containing his Pokemon card collection.”

“He set the book on the bar and thumbed through each page. He thoroughly and lovingly described every card, attempting to educate his date in the ways of Japanese pocket monsters. I’ll be fair to the guy– the dude was passionate.”

“She faked an emergency and called her friend to pick her up. He stayed and ate a plain hamburger at the bar.”

This Host Watched A Cheater Get Exposed

“I sat a couple in their mid-forties at the bar. Their server was my roommate and noted how weird they were acting– sitting on the same side, making out at the table, etc.”

“Then, a few minutes later, a pissed-off-looking man came storming into the restaurant. He stood at the host stand while just looking around. So, I asked him if he needed a table. He just gave me a death glare and marched over to the couple at the bar.”

“The woman looked horrified. The pissed-off guy was whisper-yelling at the woman. All I could make out was that she was on a date with a coworker and the angry guy was her husband. He found out through another friend.”

“I was just standing at my host stand– five feet away– watching all of this go down. I grabbed another server and told them what was going on. Then, the husband started getting louder, and my roommate grabbed the biggest cook we had who told him to leave.”

“The woman and husband left, leaving the other man looking confused. He sat there for a few minutes while staring down at all of the uneaten food. Then, he got up and came to the host stand for his bill. He paid and said, ‘I’m sorry for the disturbance, I did not know she was married.'”

“I felt so bad for the poor guy. He seemed very into her up until the husband showed up.”

This Puke-Filled First Date Actually Worked Out

“I bartended for a decade, and, more than once, I saw first dates go awry because one person would drink too much. The most memorable was a woman who started downing rum punches.”

“The pair was at a table, so I could not see them, and I guess the waiter had forgotten his ‘red light, yellow light’ training. After the sixth rum punch, I asked if the drinks were all going to the same person. The waiter said yes, and I was like ‘oh sh*t.'”

“Sure enough, the girl ended up puking all over the bathroom and locking herself in. When we got the door open, she was passed out, and there was puke everywhere– including all over her.”

“No cab would touch her, so the guy ended up taking her home. He came in a week later and said they were going on another date.”

“I was skeptical. But, they have been married for about fifteen years now and are absurdly happy. She avoids the rum punches.”
