“I already pay him rent– enough rent that would get me a same-sized apartment a few weeks away,” she vented.
“So, it is more than fair to him.”
Still, her boyfriend did not agree. Instead, he reportedly made some “very weak” arguments and actually accused her of trying to rip him off.
Regardless, she wound up sticking to her guns and told her boyfriend that they would not split expenses proportional to income under any circumstances.
Ever since the argument, though, she has calmed down a bit and is starting to worry that she was actually in the wrong.
Apparently, she confided in a friend about the situation– and learned that her friend and their boyfriend also make income-based payments. Her friend even claimed that the fact her boyfriend owns the apartment is completely irrelevant in this situation.
So now, she is feeling torn and has been left wondering whether not wanting to split expenses proportional to income with her boyfriend makes her a real jerk or not.
Why do you think her boyfriend still makes her pay rent even though he owns the apartment? Do you think income-based payments are reasonable for general expenses? What about the non-existent “rent” in this scenario? How would you handle this situation?
