He Recently Inherited A Home From His Grandfather And Wants To Kick Out The Former Renters To Sell The House, But His Wife Implied That He Would Be A Terrible Person For Taking The Home Away From A Family

This man’s grandfather owned several commercial and residential properties, and in his will, he left a house to each of his grandchildren.

Sadly, his grandfather passed away.

The house that his grandfather left for him is in a different state from where he lives right now.

At first, he was going to sell the house once the lease was up for the people who are currently renting out the house.

The end of the lease is approaching soon, so not long ago, his wife went to the house to inspect it and then found a real estate agent to deal with the sale of the house for them.

Later on, he and his wife both went to see the house and assess what they needed to fix up prior to the sale, and they met the current renters.

“They tried to talk us into not selling the house and extending their lease. They’re a family with kids and, according to them, rent is going up in the city, and they can’t afford another rental house. They’ll have to go to an apartment that will cost more, won’t have a yard, and their kids will have to change schools,” he said.

He’s empathetic to their situation, but the renters didn’t persuade him to change his mind about selling the house. He has never been a landlord before, and he doesn’t want to be one.

While he didn’t feel any differently about his decision, his wife was convinced by the renters’ argument.

Throughout the following week, she pleaded with him to renew the renters’ lease.

His wife told him that they could allow the renters to stay, but since the house is in a different state and he doesn’t have any familiarity with being a landlord, he doesn’t like this idea.

“The other problem is the property management company that’s currently taking care of the house informed me that the state and city recently passed a bunch of rental laws that will make it harder for them to do business, so they’re only taking clients with multiple properties. This sealed the deal on me not wanting to be a landlord. If pros can’t make money on a single property, I will definitely lose money,” he explained.

As a compromise, he said to his wife that if the renters wanted, he could sell them the house instead of listing the property. His wife passed on this message, but the renters knew they wouldn’t be able to do that.

“They told her they can’t afford the $300,000 down payment and won’t qualify for a mortgage on their salary. My wife floated the idea that we sell them the house on the cheap, but I don’t really feel like selling the house for less than market value. Her other solution is to finance the purchase ourselves instead of going through a bank,” he shared.

However, neither he nor his wife have any background knowledge of how to finance the sale of a house, so he doesn’t feel comfortable with this idea, either.

Since his grandfather left him the house, he acknowledges that the final choice is his alone. But his wife has been making him feel terrible about refusing to renew the renters’ lease or try one of the other ideas she’s thrown out.

Plus, his wife hinted that only awful people would be willing to force a family out of the house they’re living in.

What would you do if you were in his shoes?
