Have you ever had a successful job or a large salary and noticed that all your loved ones suddenly expected you to pay for their meals and other things?

One man is a professional soccer player and was appalled when friends from his hometown went out to dinner with him, ordered the most expensive items on the menu, and then expected him to pick up the check.

He is a soccer player for a professional team in Europe, which has been very exciting for him.

Recently, his team played a game against his home city, and he took advantage of the opportunity to have dinner with some hometown friends.

“I have been friends with these people since high school, and I would say they are the only true friends I have,” he explained.

“It’s incredibly difficult meeting people when you are kind of famous and supposedly rich, as most of the people want to use you in some way.”

Unfortunately, he didn’t realize that his childhood friends would end up using him too.

Everyone was super excited to see him, and he didn’t think twice when he saw the choice of restaurant. It was a nice place, but it also was the kind of place where you could get a reasonably priced meal if you were considerate.

It was the same restaurant he had chosen when he first got signed to his team. He invited his friends to eat with him in celebration and picked up the check. What he didn’t realize was that his friends thought it would be the same kind of setup this time around.

At dinner, everyone was having a lovely time. He was enjoying himself until it came time to order food, and his friends started ordering the most expensive dishes on the menu.

Although he doesn’t drink during the soccer season, his friends ordered several bottles of the priciest wine available, including one bottle that cost over $400.

He began feeling extremely uncomfortable as he realized his friends most likely expected him to pay for everything.

“When everybody had ordered, I was thinking whether I should say something or not, and my mood started declining after this,” he said.

“My friends noticed this and asked if I was okay. I told them that they had made me feel extremely uncomfortable because I never said I was going to cover everything.”

His friends all became surprised, and one said he should’ve told them in advance they had to pay for their own food since now they wouldn’t be able to afford the check. He responded by saying they should’ve told him they expected him to pay for their meals in advance.

Then, he told his friends he thought the evening was more about them spending time together, not going crazy on a bunch of expensive food and drinks.

His friends began to feel bad, so they told him not to worry about paying for them. The bill came out to be a little over $500 per person, and everyone awkwardly paid their share, even though he knew they couldn’t afford it.

“Everyone remained sad but courteous all the time,” he recalled.

“They said goodbye in good manners and wished me the best for the rest of the season.”

Now, he’s feeling guilty because although he didn’t want to cover an outrageously expensive bill, he didn’t intend to ruin the night’s good vibes or stress out his friends.

Did he do the right thing by calling his friends out, or should he have just paid the bill?
