When you have relatives over for Thanksgiving, there’s bound to be some drama, even if it’s just a little bit.

But it can be too much when that drama compromises the well-being of someone or something in the house.

One man recently had to kick out his in-laws after they let his dog get out, and she almost lost her life.

He lives in a large home with his dog, Lucy, and is engaged to his fiancée, Meg. Meg has her own apartment but is in the process of moving into his house, where they’ll spend their foreseeable future together.

“Since my place has a lot of room and Meg’s doesn’t, I agreed to host her family from out of town for Thanksgiving,” he said.

“I’m going to be blunt: I do not like Meg’s family. They are all extremely conservative…Meg is very different from them but is close with them.”

“She hasn’t seen them in a year, so I agreed that they could stay at my place for the holiday because I can usually tolerate them enough.”

The day before Thanksgiving, after Meg’s family arrived, things were going fairly smoothly. For a bit, at least.

Meg’s parents had already arrived that afternoon, but her sister came a bit later. When Meg’s sister pulled up, he was in the bathroom and heard Meg’s mom call out to him, telling him she was going to let Lucy out so they could greet Meg’s sister.

He shouted back from the bathroom and told her not to let Lucy out, that she needed to be on a leash, and that he needed to handle her.

He didn’t hear anything for two minutes, so he figured everything was fine. But then, Meg came rushing into the house, screaming that Lucy had run off and was already down the street.

“I ran out of the house and got in my car to drive after her, but I could never find her,” he recalled.

“I drove all around my neighborhood and adjacent neighborhoods trying to find her all day, but I just couldn’t. She had my number on her collar, but I was terrified she was gone or got hit by a car or something.”

“Meg drove around in her car throughout the day, too, but her parents and sister did nothing. They just spent the day alone at my house.”

He decided to sleep for a few hours Wednesday night and then went right back out Thursday morning, Thanksgiving Day, to continue looking for Lucy while Meg’s family didn’t help.

Thankfully, he got a call in the afternoon that someone had found Lucy. When he picked her up, she was traumatized and covered in bite marks, making him believe she had to fight off some other kind of animal during her night outside.

After taking Lucy to the emergency vet to get patched up, he didn’t get home until Thursday night. He spent most of the next day locked in his bedroom with her to comfort her and avoid Meg’s family, whom he was very angry with, as they never apologized for what happened to Lucy.

“Meg’s dad knocked on my door and told me to be a man and that the dog was back and she was just a stupid dog,” he remembered.

“I told them all to leave. Meg was upset and said they didn’t have anywhere [to go], and I said I don’t care, but they can’t be at my home.”

“They eventually left after I threatened [to call] the cops. Meg left with them and texted that I was rude for offering my home and then kicking them out, and they made an honest mistake.”

However, he feels that Meg’s mom didn’t make a mistake when she let Lucy out but simply ignored his request to wait until he could put her on a leash.

Should he feel bad for kicking out his future in-laws, or was their behavior inexcusable?
