This 29-year-old guy has been planning his dream trip for over a year now. He has always wanted to go on a month-long trek through South America, and in just one month, it was finally supposed to happen.
“It’s something I’ve been saving up for and looking forward to forever,” he said.
However, he has an older brother, who is 31 and tends to be very spontaneous. While his brother’s laid-back nature can be “cool” sometimes, though, the habit is now ruining his entire vacation.
For context, his brother just randomly announced that he was engaged. But, the real problem was that his brother also announced the wedding date– which is only one month away!
“And yep, you guessed it. It’s right smack in the middle of my trip,” he revealed.
According to him, his brother has known about his trip to South America ever since he booked it, too. Still, his brother didn’t bother to check the wedding date against his trip dates while planning the nuptials.
So, when he found out about the event, he decided to tell his brother that he simply couldn’t attend the wedding. And afterward, his brother totally flipped out.
His brother is claiming that the wedding will be a “big family moment,” so he really should be there. His parents have also taken his brother’s side, arguing that he could visit South America anytime; his brother’s wedding, on the other hand, will only happen once.
That’s why his entire family is now pressuring him to cancel his trip in order to be at the wedding, but quite frankly, he just doesn’t want to.

“Here’s the thing: I’ve put a lot of time, money, and effort into planning this trip. It’s not just a vacation; it’s something I’ve dreamed of doing for years,” he reasoned.
Yet, on the other hand, he realizes that weddings are important life milestones, and he would feel pretty bad about missing his brother’s big day.
He tried to see if his brother would work with him to find a compromise, suggesting that his brother look for a different wedding date. Still, his brother just refused to budge because invites had already been sent out, and deposits had already been put down.
“And now I’m being made out to be the bad guy in the family for sticking to my plans,” he vented.
That’s why he can’t help but wonder if refusing to cancel his dream trip just to attend his brother’s last-minute wedding is really so unreasonable or not.
Do you think he should feel bad about refusing to cancel the vacation? Or should his brother have checked with family when choosing a wedding date that’s so soon? What would you do in this situation?
