Imagine having your spouse wake up and treat you like you’re some stranger they’ve never met before in their life. When a relationship goes off the rails, there’s usually a sign, no matter how small.
It could be a shift in tone, a weird distance, something you can look back on and acknowledge that yes, things began to crack in that moment. But this man didn’t get any of that, let alone closure.
One minute, he had a wife who made future plans with him, and then the accident happened, and she came back acting like their entire marriage was some made-up story he was trying to sell her.
What makes it even harder is that she remembers plenty, but he’s just not included in that.
Two months back, this man’s wife was involved in a car accident. While it was not pretty, it wasn’t exactly lethal, though she did end up in a coma for three days. Her phone was ruined in the crash, and they never recovered it.
After his wife woke up, she was completely confused, which the doctors assured him was normal. They added that she should regain her memories in a couple of days. However, when she saw him for the first time, she wanted to know who he was.
He was positive she was teasing him, but nope, she kept on pretending as if she did not recognize him, despite spending the last four years married.
His wife’s mom and dad were present at the hospital when she awoke, and she instantly knew who they were. The doctor who witnessed all of this told him that due to her head injuries, amnesia was not likely, but it was not something they could say was implausible either.
Following his wife’s discharge from the hospital, she stated that she would not go home with him. Her parents said they could be there with her, but she still declined.

Instead, his wife left and went home with her mom and dad. To this day, she has no interest in spending time with him, but she has seen evidence that they’re married through videos, pictures, and her belongings in their home.
“The thing is, I don’t believe her. I’m pretty sure she is doing all of this just to get a divorce because the first thing she told me after going home with her parents was that she doesn’t care if we’re married, she doesn’t know me, and wants a divorce,” he explained.
“I still don’t know why, though, why would she lie instead of just telling me she wants a divorce? I never cheated, mistreated her, or anything like that, and even if she just doesn’t love me, this is crazy.”
“Let’s be honest, amnesia is not nearly as common as it is in the movies or TV shows, and apparently, she doesn’t remember the last 6 years. It seems crafted. I can’t talk to anyone about this because when I tried to tell my MIL about my suspicions, she lost it on me, but this doesn’t make any sense.”
His wife is still demanding a divorce, and he has found out that her lawyer suggested couples counseling or mediation in lieu of jumping right into splitting up.
Oh, and she removed him from being able to access her medical records, so he’s really in the dark now.
His wife will not speak to him, and she signed up for a dating app, which is leaving him even more puzzled. This is making him crazy, and he cannot grasp why his wife is acting like this.
They were supposed to rent a cute cabin for the holidays. They were supposed to start trying for a baby next year. His wife used to be loving, shy, and funny. They loved spending time together. But now, his life is so far from what he knew.
I don’t know how I feel about this one. Brains are tricky, as are memories. I’m sure it’s painful for him to hear that his wife no longer has an interest in being with him, regardless of whether she’s faking it or not.
She obviously wants to exit their marriage, and I think he should grant her that wish, since she’s not interested in working on being with him one day.
