If you were married to someone who had an awful kid that you couldn't stand, would you get a divorce or try to hang in there and fix it?

This woman is afraid that she made one enormous mistake in marrying her husband, because she completely hates his daughter, and now she's pregnant.

She can't stand how her husband parents his daughter, because it's really not effective. They have her stepdaughter in their house three days a week, and this kid is a spoiled brat and a bully, even to adults. This kid is so mean that she can't make any friends.

"Picture Regina George from Mean Girls, but a 9-year-old. Her mother isn’t around and lives with Grandma when not with us. My husband wants full custody as he believes everything is Grandma's fault," she explained.

Her husband says the way that Grandma parents is to blame for everything. Her stepdaughter flips out, and Grandma is right there to give her whatever it is that she wants.

Her husband has a few rules with her stepdaughter, but they're few and far between, and her husband's excuse is that if he's too strict with her, she will refuse to visit them.

Her stepdaughter has too much screentime, and her husband gives her unlimited access to his phone, too. When she tries to reach her husband, she can't because her stepdaughter is busy playing games on his phone and won't tell him if she calls or texts.

A week ago, she was experiencing some pain, and she reached out to her husband to see if he thought she should go get the doctor to check her out. He didn't know she texted him about this, since his stepdaughter had his phone.

"I am finding myself slowly resenting my stepdaughter. When I finish work on days we have her, sometimes I just sit in my car to avoid entering the house," she added.

"Just going inside fills me with dread. It is mentally exhausting. Which I know isn’t fair to her. As she is just a kid. It wouldn’t be fair to her long-term to stay and help raise her with this resentment that is slowly building."

"I think I need to leave. I just wish I figured this out before I became pregnant. And yes, I know how much this child is struggling due to the trauma her mom put her through before leaving. We have her in therapy."

She's trying to figure out her next move, but she's afraid that a divorce is inevitable.

I think she needs to be honest with her husband about how upsetting she finds his daughter, so they can see if it's possible to make a change.

If it can't be changed, well, then she has her answer: she does need to leave them both behind. I unfortunately feel that if she disliked his daughter so much from the beginning, she never should have married him in the first place, but that's beside the point now.

What advice do you have for her? How will this spoiled brat/bully dynamic translate once there is a vulnerable infant in the house?
