When life hands you a situation that feels like it’s straight out of a primetime legal drama, you don’t always have time to wait for the credits to roll.

She’s spent years playing mom to a child whose parents are unable to care for him, and she’s about to go behind his dad’s back to make sure this kid has a stable future.

This 30-year-old woman has been with her 35-year-old boyfriend, Max, for six years. Max is a single dad, and when she met him, his son was four.

Following a year of dating, she moved in with Max and his son, and she was happy. She ended up falling in love with Max’s son after living with him for six months, and then his son began calling her mom.

Three years into dating Max, he ended up in prison after getting into trouble, and he’s still there with time left on his sentence. When Max went away, he said his son should stay with her.

His son’s mom abandoned him two months after giving birth and has said she doesn’t want him. She calls once a year, if that, even though she’s told this woman to reach out whenever she wants to.

“I’ve always sent pictures, but most of the time she doesn’t respond. I’ve just never wanted to feel like I was taking away from her to be in his life,” she explained.

“Even when Max was first incarcerated, I reached out to her to let her know what was going on, and the first thing she said to me was, ‘Well, I can’t get him because I can’t take care of him.’ That was nowhere near close to what I was saying! I just felt like she should know.”

“Now our son is 9-years-old, and I currently don’t have custody of him. I recently just found out that Max also doesn’t legally have custody of him because he isn’t on his birth certificate.”

After Max went to prison, she was the one who had to sign his son up for school or accompany him to appointments, and nobody has ever asked her if she has custody of Max’s son.

Considering Max’s son is with her and will be for a while, she thinks it’s time to be granted full custody of the kid to keep him in her care and ensure she can always advocate for his best interests.

Not that long ago, she brought up officially adopting Max’s son and getting him into therapy, and Max replied that he would think about giving her custody.

“Ummmm… excuse me? What is there to think about, sir??? Max said that he feels like I want control, but I’ve never been a controlling person,” she added.

“And honestly, what am I getting out of it other than making sure our child is safe. I need to always be able to do whatever needs to be done for him. Max started a huge argument and completely flipped it around on me.”

“I honestly got very emotional and started yelling because everything I would say, he would flip it around and never give me a real reason as to why. He started to say that our son needs therapy because of me. He told me that I wasn’t a real mother, etc.”

Max said some horrific things to her that she never imagined coming out of his mouth. She is deeply hurt by his words, but she doesn’t care about Max’s opinion on custody, because this is about his son, not him.

Additionally, she’s ready to dump Max over how he acted. She very gently asked Max’s son after the call if he would like to live with her while Max is gone, and he said that she’s his mom, so of course, he’s going to be with her forever.

So, she’s planning on going behind Max’s back and secretly gaining custody of his son.

“Technically, his mom abandoned him, and his dad, [who’s] not even on his birth certificate, isn’t even capable of caring for him,” she concluded.

She’s left wondering if she’s wrong for wanting to do what it takes to protect Max’s son.

Whoa, she needs a good lawyer ASAP to help her navigate this one. I am willing to bet Max’s mom will have no problem awarding her custody of the kid, since she ditched him, and that’s the only person she needs on board with her custody strategy, since Max isn’t on the birth certificate.

She’s an angel for being such a good mom to Max’s son and for having a desire to help him out so much. She shouldn’t tell Max what she plans on doing, but she should dump him.

What do you think? Do you think Max is genuinely worried about control, or is he just projecting his own powerlessness from behind bars onto the only person helping him?
