We all know the internet is full of oversharing, but it's pretty disturbing when parents use their children's medical trauma as clickbait. When a man openly exploits his own child for views, is there any faster sign that you need to run in the opposite direction?
This 34-year-old woman spent a few weeks dating a 38-year-old single dad, and they seemed to really click. This man has two little kids, and one of them has been gravely sick for a long time, though is recovering.
This guy had his kids for one or two days a week and didn't equally share custody of them with his ex-wife. When he first told her about his kids, she had a bad feeling in her gut.
He complained about having to wake up ridiculously early to make food for his sick child, who had to be tube-fed multiple times each day.
He obviously didn't like spending time with his own kids. The saddest thing for her was hearing about the sick child, who is luckily doing much better.
"Even then, I thought he had a very egocentric perspective: he told me how hard it was for HIM to have to be in the hospital for weeks, to have to wake up several times a night to feed the child, that the child vomited a lot, and it smelled so terribly bad," she explained.
"I can't remember him expressing any sadness about how the very sick child was doing. I don't feel the need to tell what sickness this is, but it's life-threatening."
This man went on to tell her about his own diagnosis of ADHD, and how is changed his life. She did like him, up until he started spilling all of the tea.
Prior to their third date, she Googled him and found his blog and YouTube channel. One of his YouTube videos had a title that said his child got diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, but he felt nothing.

He used his kids' real first and last names in his videos. He also talked about how he and his wife got divorced due to their sick kid.
She watched and read a lot of his content, coming to the conclusion that she was spot on about how this man didn't have the best relationship with his kids.
"I brought all this up with him, and made it clear to him that I thought it was remarkable to post a completely public video with the names of his entire family and 'admit' that he didn't feel anything for his children," she added.
"I was actually really angry FOR THE CHILDREN'S SAKE! Anyone in their social circle, preschool, friends, etc., can very easily find this video and imagine when the sick child gets older and can read for themselves that their father thinks their illness destroyed the marriage between mom and dad?"
They got into a blowout fight over it, and this guy insisted that she owed him an apology for being so judgmental of his feelings. She did say sorry for hurting him, but outlined that she didn't need to apologize for her true thoughts on the content he's been creating.
He responded that what he said was true, and the truth isn't always so nice, so he isn't taking back anything he said out there for the world to see.
She also addressed with him that he was cickbaiting his kid's sickness to clearly gain more views on his YouTube videos, and he confessed that it was his intention all along.
While she enjoyed her dates with him and does think he's nice, she couldn't stop thinking about what he said in his videos, so she dumped him.
"When I told him I didn't want to date anymore, he said, 'So the illness of my kid, that is out of my control, has come to punish me once again, it destroyed my marriage, and now this, between you and me.' So freaking childish, self-pitying, and far from the truth," she continued.
"Did I overreact and judge him too harshly? To add to the injury, I felt that his reaction when I confronted him was immature and an ego trip. I honestly don't know! Luckily, I've never lived with a sick child, and I understand that it must be absolutely terrible, but is this a reasonable thing for a father to post online?"
"Is this a normal attitude towards children? I'm completely lost. Maybe I just shouldn't have said anything, but because of my own upbringing, I feel very strong about kids being treated badly. This man has already suffered a lot in life, and I feel mean looking back."
It's despicable that this guy confessed to using his sick kid to benefit his videos. And it's even worse that he used his child's real name.
No, I don't think she's overreacting for not wanting to keep dating a man who exploits his kid like this.
What advice do you have for her?
