It just might be that even the most insufferable people have redeeming qualities. If you hated someone in your family with a passion, only to have them save the life of your child, would that change your mind about them?
This woman’s brother is married to a woman who is completely and utterly obnoxious. Her sister-in-law’s other highlights include being arrogant, self-obsessed, and condescending. She sounds like a real peach!
“She looks down on every one of us, always with this punchable smirk on her face. Nothing penetrates her thick skull. No matter how much you speak to her, she’s always smirking, not caring about what you have to say,” she explained.
“I am not the only one disliking her. All the rest of my family, except for my brother, [her] husband, of course, who she has wrapped around her little finger. He would not hear a word about her.”
“She even admits that people don’t like her, but that she’s more than fine with it. Sometimes I feel like she feeds off people hating her.”
She and the rest of her family members have spent a long time wondering what on earth her brother sees in this woman. Her brother would tell them, and then maintain that it was ok, none of them had to see what he did. Which is true, because he’s the only one who is married to the woman.
When her sister-in-law says or does something hurtful, and someone takes the time to confront her, she rolls her eyes, calls people names, and scoffs.
Recently, she went on a family vacation, and all of her siblings and their partners were in attendance, as was her sister-in-law. Everyone was hanging out at the beach, and she left to have lunch with her mom and sisters.
Her sister-in-law stayed behind because the only meal of the day that she eats is dinner; otherwise, she’s drinking protein shakes.

Her husband and the rest of the guys were supposed to be watching the kids (speaking of the kids, her sister-in-law pretends they don’t exist, which intimidates the kids and causes them to avoid her).
“Then I heard her screaming and running. It was towards my son. The thing is, she can’t even swim. Two guys who were swimming near pulled her and my son out,” she continued.
“I am in utter shock because of what she did. Apparently, even obnoxious people can do good in this world. I am ashamed of my feelings towards her.”
Yes, she’s furious with her husband for failing to watch her son, as it nearly cost him his life, but she’s more overwhelmed at the incredible display of selflessness on her sister-in-law’s end.
The longer I’m on this planet, the more I come to see that people are not black and white; they’re a lot more complicated than that.
People can be ugly and beautiful. They can be fantastic and terrible. They can be villains and angels. The serial killer Ted Bundy once saved a toddler boy from drowning in a lake, so what does that tell you?
Some people have abrasive or unlikable personalities, but that doesn’t make them bad; it just makes them different. She should let this be a teaching moment to be less judgmental toward her sister-in-law from here on out.
What advice do you have for her?
