It’s almost 2019, and unfortunately, flying cars, replicants, and the Tyrell corporations are nowhere in sight. If it’s any comfort, we’re getting really close to the larger-than-life holographic ads. The 2019 of Blade Runner is pretty far from what we’re going to end up with, but hey, at last it looks like we’re going to get a solid sequel for our trouble. The second trailer (here’s the first) for Blade Runner 2049, the sequel to the 1982 classic, is out now, and it’s setting the same kind gritty noir tone as the original. I don’t know about tears, but I’ll be there’s going to be rain.
The latest trailer once again shows off Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, who at one point runs probably about as fast as Harrison Ford can run these days. We also get a look at Jared Leto, who will be playing the new father figure — a creator of replicants who seems to be getting tired. Robin Wright is also in there as the police chief above Gosling’s Officer K. The action seems to revolve around K and a woman named Joi (Ana de Armas).
The neat part? K seems to be taken aback by a book with torn out pages — given the original, you have to imagine Balde Runner 2049 will once again be toying with the concepts of memory and identity. We don’t know much more than that, and, like some of our esteemed colleagues in the field, we don’t really want to until the movie comes out on October 6. Hopefully Warner Bros. paces themselves with the trailers — you know, like another movie of theirs.
