If you’ve bought one of the excellent UE Boom 2 or Megaboom Bluetooth portable speakers, UE has some good news for you this week. A new update will make it possible to interact with Siri or Google Now using the speaker itself.
Siri and Google Now integration comes by way of an update to the companion iOS and Android app. Once the app has been updated, the smartphone will no longer be necessary — just the Bluetooth connection. While the speaker is on and connected, a tap on the Bluetooth button will now prompt Google Now or Siri, both of whom will respond in kind through the speaker. It’s a tiny update, but it should prove to be a useful and well-timed one. The IPX7 waterproof speakers will no doubt see their fair share of time by the pool this summer, and the pool probably won’t be as kind to (most) smartphones as it will be to the UE speakers.
Ultimate Ears has been making some solid portable Bluetooth speakers over the past few years. In addition to being waterproof and getting very loud for their respective sizes, the UE Boom 2 and UE Megaboom speakers have a rugged build that makes them suitable for more extreme activities — the sort that also aren’t kind to most exposed smartphones. Being able to keep the phone tucked away while getting things done with Siri or Google Now directly though the speaker should come in handy.
