Do you believe in ghosts? According to a survey conducted by YouGovAmerica, forty-one percent of Americans believe they do. Additionally, about one in five U.S. adults actually reported “personally encountering” a ghost.

In turn, Americans’ high belief in supernatural entities is likely due to the alleged run-ins. One Reddit user expanded this conversation and asked the online community to share the paranormal stories that swayed their beliefs.

Their Grandmother Came To Them In A Dream

“My grandmother passed away three years ago after a long fight with cancer. I saw her the day before she passed, but due to work, I was not at the hospital the day of. I was pretty upset about it.”

“After her funeral, I dreamt I was at my parent’s house. But, in the dream, it was my friend’s house. My friend was telling me there were lots of ghosts in the house. And, at that point, there was a knock at the door.”

“There was a light by the door, and I saw an outline of a small lady in a purple wool coat– something my grandmother wore before she was admitted to the hospital. I walked to the door and opened it to see her standing there.”

“After unlocking the door and asking how she was, I woke up. At that point, I was completely shaken.”

“I got up to get water and process what I had dreamt. After about twenty minutes, I went back to bed and began dreaming from the exact point before I woke up.”

“I saw her [my grandmother] standing there holding a plate of my favorite food. I hugged her and asked her how she was. She said she was fine and not to be said because everything was going to be okay. I told her I loved and missed her, gave her one last hug, and then woke up.”

“I felt happy at that point, but when I tried to tell my wife what I dreamt, I completely broke down. It is hard to explain, but the dream felt extremely real. And if she did visit me, I am so glad I got one last chance to say goodbye.”

She Was House Hunting

“Years ago, my husband and I were trying to see if we could get a modest house by contract for deed. We also took my sister along.”

“It was for sale, but it still had someone’s personal effects in it as if they had just stepped out. Nonetheless, we all walked through and were hopeful.”

“Suddenly, my sister said, ‘Wait, I know whose house this was! This house belonged to that guy my son knew who died in his kitchen! This was Tony’s house.”

“At that precise moment, a cabinet door shot open and whacked her on the backside. Never one to be rattled easily, she looked up and said, ‘Okay, Tony, I get it!'”

“We checked, and it was indeed his house. The cabinet had been tightly shut, and the floor was stable. I had never seen a cabinet door randomly swing open with force behind it like that. You had to be there.”

“I wish we could have gotten the house even if he was haunting it. He was known to be a nice guy, very funny, and we would not have minded sharing it with him.”

They Were In College

“When I was in college, I lived in a really old dorm. It had not been renovated in over seventy years. We each had our own keycard to the place– which is important for later– and the doors automatically locked behind you once they shut.”

“The bedroom was designed with cabinets lining close to the ceiling. There was also a mirror and dresser space.”

“Anyway, winter break came, and I decided to stay back while my roommates traveled home. It was just my dog and me for the next week or so.”

“A couple of days in, I was taking a shower with the bathroom door open. I heard what sounded like a door slam in our door room. I peeked my head out and called out hello and my roommates’ names, but no one answered. I kind of shrugged it off.”

“A couple of nights later, I was getting ready for bed when I heard another loud slam from one of my roommate’s rooms. I froze, and my dog started going ballistic. She even hid under the bed. She weighed over sixty pounds and never hid.”

“I called out again and even texted my roommates to ask if they came home. They had not. The bedroom door was locked, so I could not get in there and assumed it must have been housing maintenance.”

“I forgot about the situation until a week later when my roommate came into my room with her face pale. She asked if I had been in her room and told me to go look at it.”

“She had fairy lights strung up that she never turned off. They had been cut in the middle and were hanging. The two cabinet doors had also fallen off, which must have been the slam I heard that night.”

“However, they laid on the floor stacked on top of one another. They were not underneath the cabinet but off to the right of it. It was honestly the most bizarre thing I had ever seen.”

“We asked housing if anyone had been in our apartment during that time frame, and they said no. Ever since that point, I had other weird experiences in my dorm from time to time.”

They Were Babysitting

“I was babysitting my niece when she was two years old. The place was a very old home that my sister was renting. It was built in the 1930s.”

“I was alone with my niece while my sister was working overnight. It was about eleven at night, and she had been asleep for a couple of hours at that point.”

“I was watching TV in the living room when I saw her running down the dark hallway. She stopped just before the entryway to the living room, and I jokingly said, ‘You better get back to bed, or I’m gonna get you!'”

“I got up to get her back in bed, but after I turned the hallway lights on, I noticed her bedroom door was still closed. Weird.”

“I opened it to find my niece completely passed out in her bed. Drooling and everything. It was not my niece I saw in the hallway. So, I took her to sleep with me that night.”

They Worked In An Old Hotel

“I work in a hotel that was built in 1885, so I have plenty of stories. But, one that still gives me goosebumps is the time I was vacuuming.”

“It had randomly stopped while I was halfway through cleaning the room. I thought the plug had fallen out of the socket, so I went to plug it back in, but it was fine.”

“I then checked the vacuum itself, and it was switched off. I switched it back on, thinking that I had just bumped the switch with the hose. But, after a few seconds, it turned back off again.”

“I went back and forth fighting with whatever spirit was there to keep it on. After about three or four times, I gave up and left the room. I went on to clean the next room where it worked fine.”

“Whoever was in there obviously thought it was funny to play jokes.”
