This woman was recently invited to join her college roommate on a luxurious family vacation. The roommate, named Meg, apparently has a very wealthy family who said she could bring one friend along.

“It was kind of awkward since I was Meg’s third choice. But, her family vetoed the first two because they did not want her bringing a boy or this other female friend they disliked,” the woman recalled.

Nonetheless, the woman was thankful to be considered and happy to join the trip anyway. Meg’s parents covered the plane tickets and resort costs, which the woman was also shocked about.

“I was very grateful for that, and I saved a lot of money up so I could make sure to buy my own food and activities while there. Also, to treat her family to dinner as a ‘thank you’ for the ticket,” the woman explained.

But, the trip just went terribly from the start– beginning with the plane tickets. Apparently, Meg and her entire family all sat first class.

Meanwhile, the woman was left alone in economy. Still, she was not going to complain over a free plane ticket and totally looked past it.

Then, on their first night at the resort, the woman accompanied Meg and her family to the grocery store.

It turned out that Meg’s parents wanted the woman to cook every meal for them at the resort’s public kitchen for the entire trip.

“I was not warned about this. But, it turns out Meg’s family is ‘so traditional’ that they see cooking as a woman’s job, and Meg’s mom had just gotten hand surgery,” the woman revealed.

In turn, she and Meg were left to find their way in the kitchen alone. This was an especially stressful task for the woman, who had no real cooking experience.

She knows a couple of “staple meals” that she makes for herself and maybe one other person. But, the woman had never cooked for a group of nine and, being a vegetarian, had no clue how to cook meat.

So, she did eventually “screw up” in the kitchen by undercooking some chicken and overcooking some steak. Rather than being understanding, though, Meg’s father was furious and began criticizing the woman.

Then, she decided to speak up for herself, which only made him more mad.

“I  got short with him and told him that if he knew how to do it better, he could pitch in instead of standing around criticizing me,” the woman said.

To this, the father said the woman was on “his vacation” and that she should not act rudely. The situation only escalated from there.

The woman ended up calling herself an “unpaid domestic servant” while Meg’s parents both screamed at her. Finally, they ordered the woman to leave their suite and go home.

She did gladly leave and immediately called the airline about her ticket. The woman asked if she could somehow prevent the family from modifying or canceling her ticket, and, thankfully, the airline was able to add a passcode to her ticket.

Afterward, the woman also visited the resort desk to inquire about room costs. She explained how she was “stranded unexpectedly” and found out they had some pretty affordable rooms.

So, with her ticket safe and a new place to sleep, the woman decided to remain at the resort– just separately. After all, she still had enough money left over the support her own meals and tourist activities.

This plan went swimmingly for three days. The woman got to sightsee and lounge on the beach totally alone.

But, during one beach sunset, Meg’s parents ran into her on the beach and reportedly “did a double-take.” Then, the pair accused her of conning them.

“They said they thought I was going home, and I told them I decided to stay. They were angry because they viewed me staying and using the return flight as having deceived them into thinking I could not afford anything,” the woman explained.

Now, she has been left questioning her actions. The woman never claimed to be unable to afford a vacation– she was simply accepting what she thought was a generous invitation.

Nonetheless, the woman is unsure if using the flight home and staying at the resort alone makes her a jerk.

What do you think? If you were in this college student’s shoes, would you have done the same?
