She Saw Her Family For The First Time In Six Years And Repeatedly Got Called Fat, So She Left A Family Dinner And Felt Like She Ruined It

This 29-year-old woman and her partner, who is 31, recently went to visit her father and stepmother, who live in a foreign country. She hadn’t seen them in six years, and she flew in from Paris for the visit.
Upon arrival, she and her partner were all invited to a dinner hosted by her stepmother’s sister and husband. But, since she hadn’t seen any of them in six years, her appearance apparently shocked the husband.
As soon as he opened the door, he actually had the nerve to ask “what they were feeding her” in Paris.
Still, she just laughed it off and admitted that she had gained some weight over the past few years– even though it’s not a life-changing amount or anything.
Regardless, just five minutes later, the guy asked her the same question about her weight.
“I laughed it off because what was I supposed to do? He was also already a bit drunk,” she recalled.
Anyway, they were later at the dinner table when the guy began making some really inappropriate conversation.
First, he started to bash Paris and badmouth the fact that there were a lot of immigrants there. Afterward, the guy started telling her partner, who is French, that “all French people are socialists.”
“We’re both left-wing, so the comment didn’t necessarily bother us,” she explained.

“But he obviously meant it as an insult.”
However, the situation only got worse after that– because the guy actually started talking about how terrible his country was.
Now, before visiting her family, her dad reportedly warned her about the guy’s views. Her dad also asked her not to engage in any arguments. That way, they could avoid confrontation at the family dinner.
So, while she was extremely angry at that point, she still tried to change the topic. Everything seemed fine for a few minutes, too, until the guy turned to her partner again and made even more remarks about her weight.
“What do you feed her with? The last time she was here, she was skinny, and it looks like she gained 30 kilos,” the guy said.
As soon as he started speaking, she immediately told the guy that his remark was not nice. Then, when he kept going, she decided to just get up, leave the table, and sit outside on the curb.
“My partner came after me, then my father, too, and my father asked if I wanted to go home,” she added.
“I said yes, even though I hadn’t planned on it, and we left.”
Yet, ever since the dinner, she cannot stop feeling like she was a jerk to her stepmother and her sister. Sure, the guy was incredibly rude, but she felt terrible that she never said goodbye to anyone.
Instead, she just got in the car, and her dad immediately drove her and her partner home. She feels especially bad that her stepmother cooked the entire day for that dinner and wound up yelling at the guy for behaving so inappropriately.
“I know what he said to me was not okay, and I was disgusted by his bigoted comments,” she vented.
Still, she can’t help but wonder whether leaving the dinner table and “ruining” the family gathering was the wrong thing to do after the guy called her fat.
Is she the one responsible for “ruining” the family dinner? Or was it completely the guy’s fault? Would you have also left the gathering if you had been treated like that?
