Are you wondering why your foundation constantly looks patchy or flaky? If so, you’re not alone. Many people struggle to get their makeup to appear flawless.
Foundation is the basis of your makeup, setting the tone for how the rest of your makeup goes on, so it can really make or break your entire look.
Of course, every makeup wearer knows the cardinal rule of prepping your skin before applying foundation. But what happens if you take all the proper steps and you’re still not getting your desired look?
Martha (@marthas_makeup) is a professional makeup artist, and she’s on TikTok explaining why your foundation might look bad.
First, Martha mentions that you should exfoliate your skin with a face scrub and foam wash. Next, you must make sure that your primer and foundation are in sync.
This means that both of your products must be either water-based or oil-based. If only one of them is water-based and the other is oil-based, your makeup won’t go on very smoothly.
“We know what happens when you put oil into water, right? It just separates, so the exact [same] thing is happening on your face. It separates!” said Martha.
So, how do you check to see if your foundation is oil or water-based? Simply take a look at the ingredient list on the back of your product’s packaging.
Don’t worry–you don’t have to read all of it. Just look at what the first ingredient is. The first ingredient is the most important because it tells you what the base of the product is.

If the first ingredient is water, that means the product is water-based. If it’s some kind of oil, it’s oil-based. Luckily, that’s pretty straightforward!
If aqua is the first item on the list and it’s not followed by any oil or silicone ingredient, then the product is water-based.
After adjusting your products, you will likely see a significant improvement. But still, don’t expect it to look as perfect as the heavily edited photos you see online. Human skin has texture. Pores and blemishes are natural, normal, and beautiful.
Martha’s explanation prompted a discussion in the comments section where some TikTok users shared what else they do to make their foundation look better.
“Exfoliation and a good moisturizer does wonders. Primers and sprays do zero for me. Do what works for you! Play around!” commented one user.
“I shave my face. Saw it on YouTube once, and that was an absolute game-changer for me. And don’t believe all that stuff about it growing out thicker,” added another.
