This 23-year-old woman and her husband, also 23, have to divide up whose family they will celebrate holidays with because their families live a long distance from each other.

For Thanksgiving this year, she and her husband are going to visit her parents, and for Christmas, they will visit his.

Due to their busy work schedules, they only have about three days to spend with his family for Christmas.

Not long ago, her husband went to his parents’ house for several days.

“When he returned, he told me that the refrigerator and freezer at his parents’ house were completely broken, and all the food within it was spoiling within days, if not hours, of being purchased,” she said.

In response, she said that that was unfortunate, and she asked him when his parents were going to be able to have the fridge and freezer repaired.

Unfortunately, her husband informed her that they weren’t even looking into repairing it yet, despite his concerns about the food in the fridge and freezer quickly going bad.

“In fact, the refrigerator had apparently already been broken for weeks before he arrived. His parents and younger siblings were eating spoiled or semi-spoiled food,” she explained.

Obviously, she expressed to her husband that she thought this was ludicrous, and he told her that he felt the same way.

While he was visiting his parents, he didn’t eat anything that needed to be refrigerated. Luckily, he was at one of his friend’s houses the majority of the time, and he also went to restaurants or ate fast food, so he didn’t have to worry too much about planning ahead with his meals.

However, she and her husband wouldn’t be able to do this when they visit his family for Christmas.

“I told him that if we arrived at Christmastime and the fridge/freezer still wasn’t fixed, then I didn’t want to eat any food that came from his parents’ house. I have kind of a sensitive stomach already, and the thought of eating spoiled food is really scary/gross to me,” she shared.

When she let her husband know her thoughts, he told her that he could see where she was coming from, but he felt like this would upset his parents.

She doesn’t want to cause issues or hurt her husband’s parents’ feelings by not eating any of the food at their house over Christmas. Where she’s from, food is viewed as something you provide to your guests, so it’s seen as rude if you refuse to eat it.

Plus, she worries that since her family makes more money than her husband’s, she will appear elitist or conceited.

But at the same time, she just can’t imagine consuming food that she knows has gone bad.

What would you do if you were in her shoes?
