Here’s Everything You Need To Know About Groomsmen Roles And Responsibilities Both Before And During Your Big Day

Weddings are beautiful celebrations of love, but while much of the spotlight naturally falls on the bride and bridesmaids, let’s not forget about the groomsmen.
These loyal friends and family members have stuck by the groom’s side through thick and thin, and their roles go beyond just looking snazzy in matching suits.
The Origins Of Groomsmen
The tradition of having groomsmen actually dates back centuries, originating in ancient Rome. Back then, groomsmen were tasked with protecting the groom and making sure that he made it safely to the wedding ceremony.
Nowadays, modern groomsmen’s responsibilities may have evolved, but their symbolic role still remains significant.
What Do Groomsmen Really Do?
Today, groomsmen are much more than just ceremonial placeholders. They make up the groom’s closest friends and family, hand-picked to stand by his side during one of the most important days of his life.
So, primarily, groomsmen are responsible for providing emotional support to grooms throughout the wedding planning process. Whether they’re lending a listening ear, offering advice, or keeping the groom happy, groomsmen are supposed to be a shoulder to lean on.
Groomsmen also assist with various wedding preparations, from helping choose attire to organizing bachelor parties and other pre-wedding events.

Often, one groomsman will be designated as the best man, too. This lucky guy will take on additional duties, such as holding the rings, giving a toast, and catering to the groom’s needs.
On the day of the wedding, groomsmen are expected to dress sharp as well, standing in matching attire alongside the groom. Preparing for this may include attending fittings, making sure their outfits are in order, and helping the groom get dressed on the big day.
Pre-Wedding Groomsmen’s Duties
Leading up to the ceremony, groomsmen will have to accomplish several key tasks to make sure everything runs smoothly.
The most popular is bachelor party planning, in which the best man and groomsmen work together to organize a memorable bachelor party that’s tailored to the groom’s interests.
Aside from that, groomsmen are also responsible for showing up to important events, like engagement parties and the rehearsal dinner, and taking care of their own travel and hotel accommodations for the event. Plus, they will have to ensure that their outfit is ready in time for the ceremony and pick up their suit.
Groomsmen may be asked to help with getting the wedding venue set up, too, by moving decorations and setting up chairs and tables.
Lastly, throughout the entire wedding planning period, groomsmen will provide support for the groom. During the pre-wedding week, this might include running any last-minute errands and making sure that he’s relaxed.
Groomsmen’s Responsibilities During The Wedding
On the big day, these guys will have several other important duties, too. First of all, they will have to arrive early to help the groom get ready and make sure they also look the part.
Then, during the ceremony, groomsmen are often expected to escort bridesmaids down the aisle and ensure the procession goes seamlessly.
The best man will be entrusted with the rings, and it’s crucial that he makes sure they arrive at the ceremony on time, safe and sound.
The best man also often delivers a heartfelt toast, celebrating the newlyweds’ love and future together.
Last but not least, groomsmen may be tasked with ensuring that the wedding gifts are kept safe, the wedding party is corralled for photos, and any guests’ questions are answered.
