Infertility is one of the loneliest things a person can go through, and it has a way of making everything feel personal...even the good news of someone else.
He's been navigating his own journey to become a dad, but his sister asked him to put it on hold because her own struggles made his happiness hard to deal with.
We all want our siblings to be our biggest cheerleaders, yet sometimes, their own personal heartaches make it impossible for them to clap when we finally win.
Approximately two years ago, this 31-year-old man and his partner, whom he had been with for more than a decade, split up. But before their relationship came to an end, they were planning on having a baby, though they had a hard time getting pregnant.
Then, they thought about turning to IVF, but that didn't end up happening, as they broke up. Following the split, he still wanted to pursue having a baby, as being a dad has always been a dream of his, and being a single parent doesn't scare him.
"Since then, it’s been a lengthy process (finding a donor/matching with a surrogate/genetic testing). Close family somewhat knew of my plans, but not much, since nothing was definite yet," he explained.
His 34-year-old sister Kate has also been trying to get pregnant with her husband for years without success. A week ago, he was notified that he could schedule an embryo transfer date, as his IVF journey has been working out well so far.
He told his mom the exciting news, but kept it from everyone else in his life. A couple of evenings ago, while at a family event, he was chatting with his parents and his sister when his mom spilled the beans on the embryo transfer.
His mom was over the moon about getting to potentially have two grandkids at the same exact time, and Kate said she was not yet pregnant, but was dismayed, as she thought she could have been.

Yesterday night, he was having a conversation with Kate, and since he knows his sister so well, he knew she was bothered about something.
"I figured it was about her baby struggles and let her know she can talk to me about it any time. She said that was part of it, but that the main thing bugging her was me ‘being in a rush’ when I know how hard she’s been trying to conceive, and she said I should hold off," he continued.
"I told her (as gently as I could) it doesn’t really work that way. Her response was, 'How? The transfer hasn’t even been done yet?' The convo ended with her letting me know that she feels I’m trying to upstage her, and I left it at that because I want to believe she’s just taking out her frustration on me, but I’m wondering if I really am being insensitive towards her here, [am I the jerk]?"
Life is not a competition, and someone needs to tell Kate that. It's not fair for Kate to demand that he put his dreams on hold so she can get pregnant first.
It's pretty unhinged of her to say he's stealing the spotlight away, and she definitely needs to see a therapist to work through her feelings.
Understandably, she's having a hard time with her fertility journey, but he's not taking anything away from her by being on his own path to having a baby.
At the end of the day, we all have to live our lives for ourselves, and we can't stop doing what we deem important for anyone.
