After her daughter, Bella, died during labor, TikToker Tiffany (@thatvegancowgirl) was afraid of having to break the news to people in her daily life over and over again, for instance, the UPS driver.

Sharing her own sadness and having to relive it each time was one of her biggest fears. Every single time the UPS driver came to drop off a package, he would always excitedly ask her when the baby was coming.

There was a time he came by the house after Bella passed away during labor. Unaware of what had happened, he asked to see the baby. Tiffany had to do the thing she had been dreading: telling someone else that Bella had passed away.

The UPS driver cried over her loss with her. They didn’t know each other well beyond those brief doorstep exchanges, but they were able to share this moment of grief.

Tiffany and her husband also had to stop at different businesses throughout their small town, such as the post office and the feed store, to tell them what had happened.

“I just think about that interaction so much,” said Tiffany.

“It’s truly something I feel like no one would ever think about. Because when you are pregnant, if you haven’t gone through a loss, you are so naive in these realms…He’s still the sweetest UPS driver. I haven’t seen him in a long time, but I think about him often.”

Grief doesn’t just exist in private spaces. It spills into everyday life, small talk, and routines. That can be exhausting to deal with, but it can also reveal unexpected connections. Even the briefest of relationships can hold genuine compassion.

Many people in the comments section shared their own experiences with loss and how meaningful it was for others to acknowledge their pain, even if they weren’t close.

“May I attempt to reframe this for you? Every time you shared the news, you got to see exactly how loved Bella was by each and every person in your life, no matter how tangential they were. She only ever knew love,” pointed out one user.

“That’s community. People who don’t really know you, but still really, really care about you and want the best for you,” commented another.

“My dad passed the summer before 8th grade, and I just didn’t tell anyone who didn’t find out on their own. Carried on like he was still at home,” shared a third.

“I was so grateful for people who shared in my grief with me. A hospital worker came to my sister’s funeral and cried, and it meant so much to me. I just wanted the whole world to stop and acknowledge her absence,” added someone else.
